Description

Mechanical comprehension tests are used widely during technical selection tests within the UK careers sector. Mechanical comprehension and reasoning tests combine many different elements. The test itself usually forms various pictures and diagrams that illustrate different mechanical concepts and principles. Mechanical comprehension and reasoning tests are normally highly predictive of performance in manufacturing, technical and production jobs.

WELCOME
Dear Sir/Madam,
Welcome to Mechanical Comprehension Tests . This guide has been designed to help you prepare for any mechanical aptitude test. We feel certain that you will find the guide both a comprehensive and highly informative tool for helping you pass this type of test.
Mechanical Comprehension Tests are an assessment tool used for measuring a candidate’s ability to perceive and understand the relationship of physical forces and mechanical elements in practical situations. This aptitude is important in jobs and training programs that require the understanding and application of mechanical principles. The types of jobs which will normally require this level of ability include practical jobs such as train driver, firefighter, some armed forces roles, engineering roles and other similar jobs where an ability to work with mechanical concepts is crucial.
In addition to the tests within this guide we would also like to give you FRE ACCESS to our online psychometric testing facility.
To gain access to our suite, simply go to the following website:
www.PsychometricTestsOnline.co.uk
If you would like any further assistance with any career selection process then we offer the following products and training courses via the website www.how2become.com :
• How to join the Army, RAF, Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Parachute Regiment.
• How to become a Train Driver, Firefighter or Police Officer.
• How to pass psychometric tests, numerical reasoning and verbal comprehension tests.
• Career training courses.
Finally, you won’t achieve much in life without hard work, determination and perseverance. Work hard, stay focused and be what you want!
Good luck and best wishes,

The How2become team
PREFACE BY RICHARD MCMUNN
Before we get into the guide and I provide you with a number of sample mechanical comprehension tests, it is important that I explain a little bit about my background and why I am qualified to help you succeed.
I joined the Royal Navy soon after leaving school and spent four fabulous years in the Fleet Air Arm branch on-board HMS Invincible. It had always been my dream to become a Firefighter and I only ever intended staying in the Royal Navy for the minimum amount of time. During the selection process for joining the Royal Navy I was required to undertake a mechanical comprehension test. I can remember at the time I found it to be quite a tough test, simply because I had very little work experience and there were also very few practice papers around for me to try. However, I applied a level of common-sense and I passed the test with good grades. As I progressed through my career in the Royal Navy as an aircraft engineer I realised how important an understanding of mechanical concepts was to my job. You will find the tests within the guide useful in helping you prepare for careers which require a level of mechanical aptitude.
At the age of 21 I left the Royal Navy and joined Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Over the next 17 years I had an amazing career with a fantastic organisation. During that time I was heavily involved in training and recruitment, often sitting on interview panels and marking application forms for those people who wanted to become Firefighters. I also worked very hard and rose to the rank of Station Manager. I passed numerous assessment centres during my time in the job and I estimate that I was successful at over 95% of interviews I attended. It was ironic that I also had to pass a mechanical comprehension test when I joined the Fire Service; however, by the time applied for this job I was very competent in mechanical aptitude, as you can imagine.
The reason for my success in both the Royal Navy and the Fire Service was not because I am special in anyway, or that I have lots of educational qualifications, because I don’t. In the build-up to every job application or promotion I always prepared myself thoroughly.
Over the past few years I have taught many people how to prepare for career selection processes and assessment centres. The way to pass mechanical comprehension tests is to embark on a comprehensive period of intense preparation. I would also urge you to use an action plan during your preparation. This will allow you to focus your mind on exactly what you need to do in order to pass your test or assessment. For example, if it has been many years since you last attended a test, then you will probably have to do a lot of work to do in this area. You can do this by trying out, and understanding, the test questions and answers within this workbook and also by gaining access to our free online psychometric testing facility at the following website:
www.PsychometricTestsOnline.co.uk
The above testing suite is free of charge so I would urge you to use it during your preparation.
Finally, it is very important that you believe in your own abilities. It does not matter if you have no qualifications. It does not matter if you have no knowledge yet of how to pass mechanical comprehension tests. What does matter is self-belief, self-discipline and a genuine desire to improve and become successful.
Enjoy trying out the tests in the guide and I wish you all the success in the future!
Best wishes,

Richard McMunn

ABOUT MECHANICAL COMPREHENSION TESTS
Mechanical comprehension or aptitude tests have been in use for many years as a method for assessing a candidates potential to perform a specific job. Predominantly, they are used in careers which require an ability to work with, or understand, mechanical concepts. Examples of types of careers which require this level of aptitude include:
• Train driver
• Driving careers
• Armed forces jobs
• Engineering careers
• Emergency services
• Motor mechanic
• Aircraft engineer
Of course, the above list is not exhaustive and there are many other jobs which require an ability to interpret mechanical concepts.
Some mechanical comprehension tests include fault diagnosis questions which are used to select personnel for technical roles where they need to be able to find and repair faults in different operating systems. I have deliberately not included these types of questions within this guide as they are being used less and less. However, for those people who wish to try these tests, and indeed different types of psychometric tests, please access he free facility at www.PsychometricTestsOnline.co.uk .
Many mechanical comprehension tests require you to concentrate on ‘principles’ rather than on making calculations, and as such will include diagrams and pictures as part of the question. For example, you may be shown a diagram of a series of cogs and be asked to work out which way a specific cog is turning if another one rotates either clockwise or anticlockwise. Please do not be offended by me confirming with you that you understand the terms clockwise and anticlockwise. Understanding these two very simple terms is crucial to answering mechanical comprehension test questions accurately. For those people who are unsure, here’s an explanation:
CLOCKWISE AND ANTICLOCKWISE

The easiest way to remember the above is to think of the way that the hands on a clock rotate; hence the phrase ‘clockwise’.
You may also find that some test questions which have been created in the USA refer to anticlockwise as counterclockwise.
UNDERSTANDING MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE
You may find that some mechanical comprehension tests ask you to calculate the mechanical advantage of a simple pulley system.
Here’s an explanation of how mechanical advantage works when using a simple pulley system.

EXAMPLES OF SIMPLE PULLEY SYSTEMS
If you study the three pulley systems above you will note that each system has both supporting ropes and non-supporting ropes. Supporting ropes are ones whi
