Glossary
In order to become a teacher, you must first pass two separate tests which will assess your literacy and numeracy skills. These are known as the QTS Skills Tests, or Professional Skills Tests.
Whether you intend on becoming an English, Maths, History or Music teacher, you must first pass these two tests. In this book, you will learn how to pass the QTS Literacy Skills Test. We will cover the four main aspects of the test, and provide you with sample questions and a mock test. Additionally, we will give you some great general tips for passing the assessment with top scores!
With the help of this book, as well as determination and preparation on your part, you should have no problem passing the QTS Literacy Skills Test. Our guidance will put you one step closer to your dream role as a teacher!
What is the QTS Literacy Skills Test?
The first thing to note is that none of the QTS Skills Tests will assess your actual teaching skills. Instead, they will test your understanding of literacy and numeracy. The reason for this is that while you might not necessarily be teaching English or Maths, you will require a good understanding of both in order to teach well.
The Literacy Skills Test is carried out on a computer. This means that you will have to type out your answers, rather than writing them down on paper. The test takes about 45 minutes to complete, and can be taken at Learndirect centres which are found all over the country. Your first attempt is free of charge, but all subsequent attempts must be paid for. For this reason, it’s certainly worthwhile to prepare well in advance of the test.
What am I being tested on?
The Literacy Skills Test will assess your understanding of four main areas: spelling, punctuation, grammar and comprehension. There will be one section for each aspect, bringing the test to a total of four sections. However, the marks are not distributed evenly across all sections. The punctuation section of the test constitutes 15 marks, whilst the spelling section arrives at a total of 10 marks. Regardless, you should spend time learning all four sections, rather than specialising in just one or two and neglecting the others. This way you’ll still be able to secure marks, regardless of what is asked of you.
What is the pass mark?
You need to score at least 60 per cent (%) in the Literacy Skills Test in order to pass. The marks for each section are as follows: Spelling 10 marks Punctuation 15 marks Grammar 10-12 marks (depending on the test) Comprehension 10-12 marks (depending on the test)
Why is the test important?
In order to be a good teacher, you must possess adequate literacy skills. In order to expect students to write well and understand literacy, you need to be able to set a good example. It’s also imperative that you can clearly and effectively communicate with your students, in good English. For example, a class may be reading an online article about the First World War. If a sentence is structured poorly, confuses meanings of words or contains misspellings, students may struggle to read and understand it. In this scenario, you may have to correct the material to make it easier for them to understand.
Similarly, strong comprehension skills will allow you to identify the key points of a passage or piece of text. In turn, you could explain these points to students who are struggling with the passage. These skills apply across all school subjects, so it’s vital that all teachers have them at their disposal.
How can I prepare for the test?
Firstly, make use of the resources in this book. Each section will provide you with explanations for different devices and challenges that you might face in the literacy test, as well as practice questions and a mock test to assess your own ability. By taking these tests and checking your answers, you will be able to identify your strengths and weaknesses. This means that you can adjust your preparation to focus on your weaknesses and turn them into your strengths.
Secondly, remember that the test is taken on a computer rather than on paper. While you won’t have to worry about handwriting, you will need to practise your typing skills, particularly for the spelling section of the test. Being able to type quickly is important, but what’s vital is that you avoid mistyping. ‘Typos’ will result in a loss of marks for the spelling section. If you find yourself struggling with typing, be sure to check each of your answers before moving on so that you correct any mistakes.
