VISIT MYDRIVING.CO.UK
Driving Online was established in 1996 by Bill Lavender. It was one of the first UK driving websites. The site remains independent and is designed as an information resource intended for all drivers, including readers of this book, where any necessary technical and statistical updates can be found. ADIs who subscribe to the site can download an unlimited number of the lesson plans and diagrams found in this book.
www.mydriving.co.uk continues to attract people wishing to learn to drive; it therefore supports a free ADI Directory, where provisional licence holders can find a local driving instructor by making a simple postcode search. Registration for ADIs on the site is easy, we recommend that you do this and at the same time upload a good photo of yourself in front of your training car.
Introduction
How to Become a Driving Instructor
Becoming a qualified driving instructor is much more than starting a new job; it is about learning the skills of a new profession. An Approved Driving Instructor’s job is to teach people to drive safely and to prepare them for their driving tests. This involves not only giving instruction, but also monitoring the learner, the road and other vehicles very carefully. Learner drivers do not make deliberate mistakes. They are likely to make fewer errors where the instructor is fully in control of the learning environment by giving the correct level of tuition.
Besides an interest in driving, the starting point is having an even temperament and a personality to suit the work. Some instructors find it easier than others to be understanding, supportive and be capable of developing a good rapport with customers. Each learner driver has a different character and personality. You need to be patient – it’s not always easy to be the perfect driver and spend your time sitting next to people who can’t drive!
When becoming a driving instructor, it is very satisfying to consider that the skills you are teaching will provide a foundation for good driving throughout their motoring lives and also make a very valuable contribution to road safety.
It can be a long road to qualifying as an ADI, taking at least a year from making the application.  Studying and preparing yourself for each part of the qualifying examination is likely to take up much of your time, it will also probably involve the support of people who are close to you. It’s wise to avoid upsetting those that you care for and respect, by not criticising mistakes in their driving, unless they do ask you for an expert opinion!
This guide hasn’t been written with the intention of promoting  the driving instructor career. As in other professions, those who are already qualified will say that there are already enough practitioners in their respective businesses. It is meant as an independent and impartial guide for anyone interested in finding out how to become a driving instructor.
If you have made your mind up about joining the profession, this guide is definitely for you. If you’re not sure about the career, then this guide contains enough information to help you make your mind up.
Traffic signs and DSA documents such as the DL25 used in this publication are Crown copyright are reproduced here under a common open licence agreement. The information provided in this booklet is accurate at the time of publication. Legislation, regulations and statistics are subject to change with the passage of time. To stay up to date, we recommend that you take out a free online subscription to DSA s periodic e-magazine for ADIs and also join one or more of the national instructor associations listed in the contacts appendix at the back of this guide. Through them you can find out about local ADI groups. Technical and statistical updates to this book are available at www.mydriving.co.uk .
ABOUT BILL LAVENDER
Forward by Robin Cummins OBE Former DSA Chief Driving Examiner

This Guide has been written by industry insider, Bill Lavender.
Well known for his Better Training features in adiNEWS for the last ten years, Bill became an Approved Driving Instructor in 1982 and has spent most of his career at the British School of Motoring (BSM) in various senior training and development roles, including NVQ and BTEC awards for instructors. He was also responsible for the company s learning resources, including retail products for learner drivers.
Bill now works freelance as an independent road safety consultant specialising not only in driving instructor Continuing Professional Development (CPD), but also delivering Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (dCPC) courses for professional bus and lorry drivers.
By producing this guide, Bill has reflected on his extensive knowledge and experience of the industry to provide first-hand guidance for anyone who is thinking about becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). Being a driving instructor is a very rewarding career for the right person. New learner drivers rely on good instructors who are suited to the job, to not only prepare them to pass their tests first time, but to also help them enjoy the experience of learning how to stay safe on our busy roads.
The difference between the number of people first registering with the DSA to become an ADI and the number actually qualifying is a concern. There are clearly many people who must be very disappointed for one reason or another that they have not been able to qualify or have not been able to make a living out of the business.
It is important that every new potential instructor knows exactly what to expect from the industry and who is there to help you and the best way to ensure that all expectations are fully met.
As well as important technical information such as the lesson plans, you will find good advice on what it takes to be a successful instructor. There are many attractions to the job and how well you do really does depend very much on how you use your personality and business acumen. To this extent, Bill has included details about ways to enhance your professional CV by entering into the world of qualified driver training.
This guide will help you decide whether to go ahead with the career or not, whatever you decide, it can help you save a lot of money and time. I would recommend this guide to every single potential driving instructor.

CHAPTER 1
WHY BECOME A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR?
WHY BECOME A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR?
Very good question. Why indeed would anyone want to become a driving instructor? Very experienced motorists may have a recollection of the original 1970s Bob Newhart sketch where the American comedian depicts a series of difficult situations occurring during a driving lesson. While Bob struggles hard to keep a grip of the lesson, his customer still enjoys it and asks to book more training! If you haven t seen the sketch, it is well worth a viewing.
Most of us in Britain will have taken a full course of professional driving lessons when we learnt to drive. So
