Description

A well-known advocate and proponent of art in Chicago, Paul Klein is a long-time gallerist whose friendships with artists, dealers, collectors and curators have afforded him a rare vantage point on the vagaries and victories of the art world. Since closing his gallery in 2004, he has parlayed his insider knowledge into a cottage industry that addresses the imbalance between visual artists’ gifts for creation and their frequent unfamiliarity with managing successful careers.

Based on his many years in both the art world as a gallery owner and educator, The Art Rules is a practical, operational guide for visual artists that demystifies the art world and empowers practitioners to find success on their own terms. Filling a major void, The Art Rules gives practitioners the tools they need to realise their potential.

In The Art Rules , I felt like I was facing the enlightened webinars provided by Paul Klein in his course. He and a team of art experts share essential wisdom and information of seemingly every aspect of the visual arts. No matter where in the world you live and produce your art, in Rio de Janeiro like me, or anywhere else, Paul’s essential insights, make you connected to the art scene worldwide.

[The Art Rules] resembles—to my mind—an offspring of the tryst between an automobile user’s manual and Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet. […] As a participant in one of Paul Klein’s webinars I can attest to his charm, sometimes abrasive wit, and bottomless love of art and artists. The Art Rules contains quite a bit of Paul the conversationalist, and also includes lists, diagrams, instructions, and testimonials; valuable components of the plans of action Paul offers for living the artist’s life. You’ll want lots of book marks for all the good advice to be found in these pages.
Buzz Spector, Artist, Former Dean, Professor of Art, Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
What if you had a fairy godfather whose joy in life was to see your art career prosper? Paul Klein’s ability to connect the dots illuminates the daunting, confused task of navigating the art world. Pick up this book, read it and venture forth. You will feel empowered with genuine guidance that comes from knowing you truly have someone on your side.

This is an invaluable book for artists, art dealers, and anyone else in the art world who wants to know how it works from the inside out. Klein has collected a remarkable array of first person observations, personal stories, and cogent opinions from his many webinar participants and interviews. Included is much “how to,” “what if,” and “why not” information about websites, “pop-up” spaces, getting galleries, contracts, art advisors, and even the distinction between art dealers and gallerists.
Greg Kucera, Gallerist,
Seattle, Washington, USA
Paul Klein has compiled a straight-forward book of direct, short, easily-digestible nuggets of information from many different voices, which makes for a compelling resource guide for any artist of any age.
Sharon Louden, Artist and Editor, Living and Sustaining a Creative Life:
Essays by 40 Working Artists ,

In The Art Rules , artist mentor Paul Klein has done something unique. He has demystified the most rarified market in the world—the art market—for the artist. He has woven together a powerful matrix of contributors—successful professional artists, dealers, curators, critics, and collectors—a who’s who of the international art market today. He unlocks the heart and soul for those making art about those who truly make the art world tick.
Doug Frohman, Artist,
Chicago, Illinois, USA
Paul Klein has written an incredible book for artists with advice and great insights on many important topics. This is a MUST read for anyone wanting to learn more about how to put together their art career or take their career to the next level.
Bridgette Mayer, Gallerist, Bridgette Mayer Gallery,
 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
Paul Klein has a wonderful way of making people just feel like they belong right where they are. He is frank and honest. And what he provides to artists is truly an immense gift. I’m really not sure what price tag you could put on something so valuable!
René Romero Schuler, Artist,
Chicago, Illinois USA
Following Paul Klein’s way of looking at the art-world helped me acquire custom fitting horse blinders for racing towards my goal. His plan presents an optimistic picture. Not just are my ambitions clearer, but this was also the exact push, positive point of view, and confidence that I needed to turn my intent into action.

Foreword

W ait. You mean there are rules?
After all, most people in art school revel in not having to converge at the one precisely correct answer using the same formula as everyone else does in mathematics or applied physics.
But, for your consideration: yellow + blue always makes some variation of green, so perhaps there are some rules involved in art. The sooner you learn how and where they operate, the better to bend them to your purposes, right?
Via his Klein Artist Works seminars and this book, Paul Klein removes the plain brown wrapping and demystifies the seeming exclusivity for every artist; whether first wading into the public marketplace, or established and seeking wider career exposure. Any one KAW speaker: another artist, a curator, a dealer, a consultant, a collector, or a critic, may say one thing that sparks or solidifies your vision. When you hear several different inside sources hit the overlapping Venn diagram bull’s eye of shared knowledge, you find a truth that may give you the flashing directional sign toward your next goal.
There are not always such clear rules or commandments. Perhaps these are more truisms and suggestions. As any profession or pursuit, art has customs and practices. Wisdom and directives gleaned from literally hundreds of notable people very openly sharing their philosophies and experiences yield some eureka moments—treasure maps of how to individually navigate and thrive in passionate engagement with visual art. There are also some wacky one-off stories told around the fire of the art village. That’s part of the fun.
Because so much of the working life of an artist is often one of intense solitary making, maximizing opportunities that come via market profile and public interaction can be crucial.
Consider this your personal invitation to the art party. You will recognize Paul Klein when you arrive, because he will be the gregarious smiling fellow removing the velvet rope and ushering you inside.
Acknowledgments
T hank you to the artists who have lived and died that we may have culture. They have inspired our existence and given meaning to what we do. Thank you to the artists who are alive today and bring creativity to life, giving hope for solutions to the problems we have created.
Thank you to the artists who’ve taken my course. I’ve learned a lot from you. You make me better.
Thank you to my wife, Amy, and my children, Lucas, Megan, and Brice, who motivate and tolerate me. The frequency and significance of your good ideas regularly improve me and what I do.
Thank you Nancy Floy for the gift of your wisdom, support, confidence, and guidance.
Thank you to Tracy Bartels who transcribed my webinars, Robin Dluzen who gave structure to my thoughts, and to Iris Kohler who honed them.
Thank you to those who contributed chapters to this book. You’ve enriched it with your wisdom.
Like life’s circuitous meanderings, you never know where good news is going to come from. Thank you to Josh Garber who called telling me I just had to meet Sharon Louden, Intellect’s star author, and then followed up to make sure I had. And thank you to Sharon herself, a truly talented and generous soul, whose thoroughness and passion makes my life so much easier.
A big thank you to Robert Fields who introduced me to Intellect’s Amy Damutz who got me fired up about the company. It all began with Robert. I am indebted.
And thank you to my publisher, Gabriel Solomons of Intellect whose prescient look into the muck saw substance where I was just hopeful. And to Bethan Ball who gave form to my ignorant enthusiasm.
Thank you all.

The Art Rules
O ver the past several years I’ve conducted hundreds of webinars with an amazing array of art experts: artists, curators, art dealers, gallerists, museum directors, art consultants, and more.
I was knowledgeable going in, having had a gallery for over 30 years, commissioning art for one of the largest public projects on the planet, writing on art for The Huffington Post , and coaching TED Fellows, and still, I’ve learned a ton from the expert
