#5

We would like to thank the originators of NLP, Richard Bandler and John Grinder. We would also like to thank John Grinder for reading the manuscript, giving us very useful feedback, and for writing the preface.

#6

The field of NLP is constantly changing, and this book reflects that. It is a useful introduction and overview of the field. The book embodies the attitude of fascination with people. How do they do what they do. And the modeling skills: looking constantly for excellence in the world so you can model it and use it.

#7

NLP is the art and science of personal excellence. It is the study of what makes the difference between the excellent and the average. It is a practical skill that creates the results we want in the world while creating value for others in the process.

#8

NLP began in the early 1970s as a collaboration between John Grinder, who was then an Assistant Professor of linguistics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Richard Bandler, who was a student of psychology at the university.

#9

NLP is a method of understanding human behavior that stems from the fact that all behavior stems from our neurological processes of sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, and feeling. We experience the world through our five senses, and we make sense of the information and then act on it.

#10

The world is an infinity of possible sense impressions, and we are able to perceive only a small part of it. We must simplify to give the world meaning. Our beliefs act as filters, and we choose to act on the basis of what we perceive our model of the world to be.

#11

NLP uses a variety of basic filters to help you think about how you act. The first is an orientation toward outcomes rather than problem. This means finding out what you and others want, finding what resources you have, and using these resources to move toward your goal.

#12

The traditional view is that learning a skill divides into four stages. First there is unconscious incompetence. You do not know how to do something, but you don’t know you don’t know. You start to learn, and soon discover your limitations. You have some lessons and consciously attend to all the instruments.

#13

The fourth stage is unconscious competence. You will reach this point after practicing something for a long period of time, and your habits will become unconscious. However, your habits may not be the most effective ones for the task.

#14

NLP is about giving people more choice about what they do. If you only have one way of doing things, you have no choice at all. And when things don’t work out, you’ll have no idea what to do next.

#15

The more choices you have, the better the chance of success. The skills of sensory acuity and decision making work together like this. You decide where you want to go, and then you begin rowing. You compare your direction with where you want to go, and if you are off course, you change direction.

#16

To live the life you want, you must know what you want. You make it up. There are some rules for doing this so that you have the best chance of success. You must play an active part in order to achieve your outcome, and it must be reasonably within your control.

#17

The final frame around choosing outcomes is ecology. You must consider the consequences of achieving your outcome in the context of your wider relationships. Would there be any undesirable by-products. What would you have to give up or take on to achieve it.

#18

The POSERS process helps you check the consequences of your outcome. You should be sensitive to your feelings of doubt that start Yes, but. . These feelings represent considerations that could throw off your outcome.

#19

Change is a journey from a present state to a desired state. The motivation to make the journey comes from desire. The desired state must be something we really want, or it must be connected to something we really want. We must be committed to the outcome.

#20

Communication is the process of sending and receiving information between two people. It is a cycle or loop that involves at least two people. You cannot communicate with a waxwork dummy. Only by paying attention to the other person can you have any idea what to say or do next.

#21

Communication is the passing of a message from one person to another. It is not just what you say, but how you say it that makes the difference. The postures, gestures, expressions, and voice tone are all parts of your communication.
