Sample Book Insights:
#1 I was with the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, and we were surrounded by the Germans. I thought about home, and remembered the cabin in Oregon’s Coast Range. I lived like an Indian.
#2 In war, you quickly realize that you’re playing a game of odds. The longer you fight, the better chance you have of something bad happening to you. You die, get wounded, get sick, or quit.
#3 I was standing in front of the fire, which was growing weaker as the late afternoon grew darker. Somewhere out there, the enemy still lurked, waiting for morning. And somewhere inside me, another enemy lurked, waiting for my decision.

Insights from Chapter 2

#1

I was the best marble player in Astoria, Oregon, and I loved adventure. I would swim for miles along the Nehalem River on summer days, imagining myself as an Indian living off the land.

#2

I loved reading the Bomba the Jungle Boy series by Roy Rockwood. I lived those books, and I was the Bomba of Astoria, Oregon, in my mind. Astoria was a rough, dangerous town, and I loved it.

#3

I was born in 1921, one of four children. My father was not around much, and when he was, he would work in town and come out on Wednesday nights to spend time with us. Most of the time, it was my mother and my brothers and me.

#4

I had gotten a job on a dairy farm outside town, on land where our cabin was, working with Jack Bay’s nephew Einar Glaser. One day, while on a delivery, I was in a camp mess hall when an out-of-breath farmer shouted that a forest fire was approaching. We fled west down Sunset Highway, and the fire swallowed our cabin.

#5

I was proud to be Irish, Malarkeys, and Americans. I grew up with the stories about my uncles, who had died in France and been gassed in the Argonne Forest.

#6

My uncles, Bob and Gerald, died in World War I. Bob was playing football at the University of Oregon when he enlisted, and he struggled to survive after being gassed in France. He came to be known as Fighting Bob.
