How To Use This Book
This book is a journey into the human skull. It is complete with all the necessary details yet concise and to the point. As you navigate through this book you will come across many questions, fill-in-the-blanks, label-the-image, and clinical correlates. These are put into place to help solidify the material plus keep you on your toes. It is important that you revisit the material over and over. This book allows you, the reader, to be intellectually stimulated from all different angles and most importantly to help you remember and understand the material well beyond what is expected. Read this book from cover to cover and highlight all important terms. Peppered throughout each chapter are questions. Answer the questions and check your answers at the end of each chapter. Highlight any questions you answered incorrectly. Review any missed questions. After each answer section of each chapter you will find a checklist of important terms that you must know and should review. Be able to identify these terms on a real skull and on the images provided. The checklist is also a neat way for you and a buddy to quiz one another and make studying more interactive. At the end of the book you will see a comprehensive exam that is similar to anatomy exams other students and I have experienced in our careers. Please take your time in reading and working through this book. We wish you all the success in the world. Now let’s get ready to master the skull.

Chapter 1: Positions and Planes
This chapter defines terms that will be used throughout this manual to describe the location of structures (e.g. foramina (holes)) on the skull.
If the human body is our map, then the ANATOMICAL POSITION is our compass. A body in anatomical position is standing, feet together, upper limbs at the sides, with the face, eyes, and palms facing forward. The skull in anatomical position is depicted in Figure 1-1. All descriptions of the skull in this manual will be in reference to the skull in anatomical position.

The Planes
1. MEDIAN (Mid-Sagittal) Plane (Fig. 1-2) – The vertical plane that divides the body into equal right and left halves. It runs through the so-called midline of the body.
2. (Para) SAGITTAL Plane (Fig. 1-3) – Any vertical plane through the body that is parallel with the median plane.
3. CORONAL (Frontal) Plane (Fig. 1-4) – Any vertical plane that intersects the median plane at a right angle and divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) sections.
4 . TRANSVERSE (Horizontal) Plane (Fig. 1-5) – Any plane that passes through the body at right angles to both the sagittal and coronal planes, separating the body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) sections.
