Description

John Hicklenton was one of Britain's leading comic book artists, who took his own life in March 2010 with the assistance of Dignitas in Zurich. 100 Months is an apocalyptic parable of environmental devastation written and drawn in fore knowledge of his own impending death. An intense, hallucinatory story with overtones of Dostoevsky's 'Legend of the Grand Inquisitor' and artwork of breathtaking intensity, it is the crowning achievement of a brilliant career, a true graphic novel that engages ultimate themes of life, death and salvation. Controversial, haunting and tortured in all senses, it will inevitably fuel debate around the issues of taking one's own life. Includes a foreword by Pat Mills.

Foreword

100 Months is John Hicklenton's last and finest work. Finest because it is the purest expression of his creativity, without the compromises that sometimes overshadowed his work elsewhere. It is his words set to art, a visual poem, beautifully paced and toned, that takes you to a place comics have not been to for a long time. To Kent Williams' Blood. To the works of Druillet. To the impressionist vistas of Bill Sienkiewicz. And beyond. Despite its grim message of Earth's vengeance, I find it in no way depressing. Johnny was a very funny man as any of you who saw the award-winning documentary Here's Johnny will know. In another incarnation I'm sure he will be a comedian. He nearly was in this life. In telephone conversations with him, right up to end, he always made me laugh. And there is an element of his humour hardwired into his line-work here. Indefinable and yet omnipresent. When the Goddess smiles her Armageddon smile, I can imagine Johnny smiling too.

It's this humour, combined with sinister imagery, that makes his work so distinguished and confirms him as the greatest horror artist working in comics. This was obvious to me from the time he drew his first, deliciously evil pages for Nemesis the Warlock and is also equally obvious to his fans.
