Description

On a summer holiday with his family, Marlon Keys is about to hike the Appalachian Trail in the USA. He isn't exactly thrilled about the trip - he'd rather play on his smartphone and connect with his friends back home. But when Marlon accidentally gets separated from the group on the hike, his "boring" holiday becomes an exercise in survival. Can Marlon find his way back to his family and camp safely, or will he remain lost on the trail?

CHAPTER 1
HIKING
“Joseph Anthony Keys, turn off your phone and listen to what your father and I are trying to tell you,” Mum said from the front seat of the family car. “We’ll be at Shenandoah National Park soon.”
“OK, OK,” twelve-year-old Joseph grumbled. He rolled his eyes at his friend on the other end of the video call. “Rob, I have to hang up. My parents are forcing me to go hiking and camping with them on some sort of trail.”
“The Appalachian Trail, Joseph,” Mum retorted.

Rob looked surprised. “The Appalachian Trail? That sounds so cool!”
Joseph snorted. “What’s so cool about it? I’m going to miss your birthday party because we have to go and walk around in the woods and do some bird-watching.”
“This holiday is more than just looking at birds,” Dad corrected as he navigated down the motorway. “It’s about us spending time together, learning and enjoying the wonders of nature.”
“I can enjoy the wonders of nature in our garden,” Joseph joked. “Couldn’t we have just roasted some marshmallows there?”
“That’s it, hang up right now, or I’m taking your phone away for the rest of the holiday!” Mum said. “You’ve already missed so much of the wonderful scenery because you’ve been on your phone for the entire drive.”
