The failing of an aging parent is one of those old stories that feels shockingly new to the person experiencing it. My father, who was always tough on me as a child, is now frighteningly old and dementia-ridden. He still loves my mother, though.

My father has always wanted to know where I am seeing other people. He is constantly asking me this, and I always tell him that I am not seeing anyone else. I wish I had done more to take my dad out to get him a birthday present.

I have failed in my relationships, and I have failed in my marriage. I have not been able to meet the challenge my father laid down for me: to be with someone and be free. I still want to be with someone and be free, but sometimes I look at the incredibly romantic love I saw between my parents and I think, That’s the reason.
