Foreword - Alessandro Mascellino
Dear Reader,
We live in difficult times, and very rarely in recent history has the majority of the world population had to face a crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite its cultural diversity and general open-mindedness towards new ideas, the UK has experienced the divisive effects of the pandemic particularly acutely, due to the Brexit events that culminated in the United Kingdom leaving the EU on January 31 2020.
Spurred by the desire to become part of this multicultural society, I have recently taken the Life in the UK test and become a British citizen in spite of these chaotic world events.
Though it was ultimately a rewarding process, it was not an easy one.
In fact, many of my international friends left the UK during the pandemic and never came back, scared by the repercussions Brexit might have on their personal or professional life.
Despite these two concurring events (or perhaps because of them), however, the feeling of unity of those who have chosen to stay is stronger than ever.
If you are buying this book, you are one of them.
Whether your reasons for becoming a British citizen are practical or ideological, passing the Life in the UK test is possibly the last step you have to take, and is at the end of a long and tortuous road.
I m originally from Italy, and from a technical standpoint, obtaining Italian citizenship is a pretty straightforward process.
After living in the UK for a few years and deciding to get a British passport, I was initially shocked by the legal requirements and procedures needed to complete the process.
Living in the country for years was the easy part (though as many of you know, not always), but the language test, the hefty fees, and the interminable application were all tough and timeconsuming obstacles to overcome.
In a way, if you think about it, the worst is already behind you. Only a 24-question test before you earn the right to remain in the UK indefinitely.
Like many of you, I often thought that many of the questions in the test were the kind one would find in pub quiz pre-pandemic.
Then I talked to a few British friends, and I realised that many of them actually did not know half the answers to the exam s questions.
I am telling you this not to highlight the fact that much of this knowledge may feel tailored to just passing the test, but to clarify how diverse and fascinating UK culture is.
Did you know, for instance, that shampooing originally referred to the Indian art of head massage? Or that the first Briton to win the Olympic gold medal in the 10,000 metres was Sir Mo Farah, who was born in Somalia? Or that Florence Nightingale, often considered the founder of modern nursing in the UK, was born in Italy?
The history of the UK is not always a peaceful one, but it is a fact that, at one time, the British Empire was the largest the world has ever seen.
This unprecedented expansion has brought together cultures, languages and ideas that cannot and should not be overlooked or forgotten.
By passing this test, you ll officially contribute to keeping the UK a multicultural and multi-linguistic hub, and I look forward to welcoming you to the team.
Good luck!

Introduction
Thousands of people choose to make the UK their home every year. Your decision to join them in becoming a British citizen or permanent resident is only the start of what can be a long and challenging journey. The application process is complex, timeconsuming and expensive.
An essential part of the process is the Life in the UK Test. This book includes the complete text of the official study materials, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents . The test requires you to learn about British history, culture and law, based on information set by the Home Office. This book will make learning this information a lot easier.
Home Office statistics show that around two in ten people fail the test. At 50 for every test taken this is an expensive mistake, and an unnecessary one. We actively seek feedback from readers after their test so we can track how effective our guides are - last year 97% passed. If you closely follow the advice in this book, a pass is very achievable.
