Chapter 1
TOO TALL?
“Let’s practise those moves again,” Coach Sara
said to the Yardley dance team. “Vine step, then kick,
kick, kick and turn.”
Isla Anderson got ready to go through the routine
again. During the past few practices, she had been
making more mistakes than usual.Concentrate,Isla
thought.You can do this.
The music started, and she crossed her left foot
over her right. When she followed by crossing her
right over her left, she tripped and nearly fell.

Isla regained her balance and kicked her long legs
into the air twice. After the third kick, as she tried to
spin, she stumbled again.
Isla stood up, out of breath and embarrassed.
“That’s all for today, girls,” Coach Sara said. “We’ll
go over it all again next time.”
Isla walked over to the water fountain, where
Lydia Taylor, her best friend, was queuing up.
“I don’t understand why I’m înding these steps so
diïcult,” Isla said. “We’re doing such easy moves.”
“You’re just having a bad day,” Lydia replied.
“It happens to everyone.”
“I suppose so,” Isla said. “But I feel as though I’ve
been having trouble since we came back from the
summer holidays.”
“You’ll get it back,” Lydia said. “Perhaps we could
do some extra practising. Your house? Tomorrow?”
“Sounds good!” Isla said. “Thanks for making me
feel better!”
Isla and Lydia grabbed their dance bags and

headed towards the door. As they chatted with their
teammates Alice, Lexi and Ashley, Coach Sara waved
them down.
“One more thing, everyone! I forgot to remind you
to take measurements for this year’s costumes,” Coach
Sara said. “I need your height, and measure your
leg length for leggings. Also let me know what size
leotard you need. Thanks, girls. See you next time!”
“I hope that this year’s costumes are as cool as last
year’s,” Isla said. “I loved the lilac colour with the blue
trim.”
“Those were so glam,” Lydia replied.
“The sequins on the ones we wore for the pop
dance were great, too,” Lexi said.
“I wish they still îtted us,” Ashley added.
I’ve deînitely outgrown mine,Isla thought.None of
my clothes from last year really ît now.

Later that night, after dinner, Isla handed her
7
mum a tape measure. “Can you measure me for my
dance-team costume, Mum?” she asked.
“Of course,” Mum said, closing her laptop.
“Come into the kitchen. If you stand up against that
wall, I can measure your height.”
Isla walked towards the wall in the kitchen where
her parents had always measured her and her brother,
Ben.
Mum pointed to the tallest mark with Isla’s name
on it. “This was you almost exactly a year ago,” Mum
said. “Let’s see where you are now.”
Isla stood up against the wall, and Mum made a
new mark. After checking the tape measure, Mum
grinned. “Isla, you’ve grown almost ten centimetres!”
“Really?! That’s a lot,” Isla replied. “Can you
also measure my legs? Coach Sara needs those
measurements, too.”
“I’m sure you have a lot more leg to kick these
days!” Mum said as she measured.
Isla thought about the issues she’d been having at
