Nero the Guide Dog Meets a Unicorn
Nero was very excited this morning. Today was the day he was going to his new owner, Miss Grace Morningside! He had met Miss Morningside the previous week, and they had both liked each other immediately. Ann, his handler and trainer at the Guide Dogs for the Blind Dog Training Centre, had taken him to meet Miss Morningside and decide if they were compatible, and after an hour of walking about with each other, Ann said that they were very obviously made for each other.
Nero had been at the Centre for two years, training very hard to learn all he had to know to pass the tests, (the hardest part for him was learning to ignore other dogs) but all his efforts had paid off and he had become a fully qualified working Guide dog! Now the great day had dawned, and Nero was going to stay with Grace Morningside, and be her faithful companion, and most importantly, her eyes, to guide her safely, and with confidence, along the streets and through the shops for the rest of his life! Wow, it was very exciting!
The next few weeks were spent getting to know each other, and Ann the trainer took them out for several hours every day, until she was completely satisfied that Grace and Nero understood each other’s moves, and in fact became as one when out and about!
One day, when they had returned home from a trip to the city, visiting a large shopping centre for the first time. This experience was quite different for Grace Morningside, as she lived in the country, and since losing eighty per cent of her sight in an accident three years previously, and being classed officially blind, she had stuck to familiar territory, only venturing as far as her local village. Nero had sensed her nervousness, and had been extra careful to guide his mistress with all the confidence he could muster.
Ann put the kettle on to make a pot of tea, while Grace removed Nero’s harness and lead. She gave him a few well deserved pats on his head and rubbed his ears, praising him for guiding her so well. She was completely confident in his ability to guide her and keep her safe when out.
