Introduction
Before the lesson ask children to bring in photographs of their own houses.
Discuss with children what homes are for. Ask them to say what their own homes are like and why they are special to them.
Main Lesson
Look at a selection of pictures showing different kinds of houses – bungalows, town houses, etc. Label the different kinds of homes and ask if any children live in homes similar to these. Children could put themselves into groups and discuss what kinds of homes most people live in etc.
Tell children where you, the teacher lives and write the complete address on the whiteboard. Discuss with children the significance of each line of the address. Ask children to say where they live (the register might be a handy aid here!)
Help the children to write out their own addresses on small separate sheets of paper Any early finishers could draw a picture of their own house.
Bring the children back together and place their addresses on appropriate places on the local map.
Plenary
Locate the school on the map then while looking at the local map discuss with children who lives furthest away and who lives nearest. How can we tell?
Resources
Photographs of children’s own houses, large scale map of local area, pictures of different types of houses (flats, detached, semis, bungalows etc.) Small sheets of paper to write out addresses.
Assessment
Can children identify a house that is similar to their own?
Can they say where they live?
Can they talk about their own house and where they live in simple geographical terms?
Extension Activities
When children carry out the survey of where they live, or the kinds of houses in which they live, there are opportunities to link the work with Maths – classifying, representing and interpreting data.
ICT Opportunities
Children could print out their addresses by selecting streets, villages from a word bank in Word, Clicker or similar program
