INTRODUCTION

My modern calligraphy journey

THE FIRST ENCOUNTER I have always had a strong afﬁnity with pen and ink. Back in school, I used to hand-letter on my notes. I didn’t know what hand-lettering was then. It was simply pretty bubbly writing that mimicked the fonts used in word processing software. My husband is an avid fountain pen collector. Although attracted to these exquisite writing tools like a magpie to shiny things, I was initially nervous about trying out his delicate vintage fountain pens. Encouraged by my husband’s enthusiasm and how his eyes lit up as he shared his newfound hobby with me, I gave it a go. The nib ﬂexed like butter and I discovered that I could create old-fashioned cursive writing simply by varying the pressure I exerted on the pen. I found the movement of writing in cursive enchanting, and it opened my eyes to how people used to correspond with each other before modern-day pens were commonplace. Among my husband’s fountain pens was a dip pen and a pointed nib. I was hooked after writing with a nib for the ﬁrst time, back in 2012. The rhythmic strokes of writing with a dip pen drew me in, and I liked it as a more economical and durable alternative to a fountain pen. My ﬁrst encounter with the dip pen led me to try out a series of tools and materials in order to ﬁnd the perfect combination of paper, nib and ink that would allow me to write without inky issues. Once I settled on the ideal set of tools and materials that worked for me, I couldn’t stop writing.

30DAY CALLIGRAPHY CHALLENGE

Will you accept my 30-day calligraphy challenge? It is created with the intention of motivating you to practise daily. Think of it as an invisible accountability partner. I understand that time may not be a luxury for most of us, so I’ve designed each challenge to be a quick ten-minute calligraphy ‘workout’. You don’t have to use the nib and ink, pencils work just as well. Regardless of your choice of tools, always try to begin each session with a one- to two-minute warm up (refer to page 56). As you progress through this calligraphy challenge, ask yourself these three questions:
