~Dedication~
This book is dedicated to all the struggling Indie Artist, record labels, producers and all that seek knowledge about the basic principles of the music business. I have worked in the music industry for about 12 years doing workshops, seminars, street promotions, radio promotions, store merchant, and a host of others things that pertain to music industry.
In 2004, I started a company called "Hi Praz Network Inc." working with Indie Artist because I knew their struggles and the lack of knowledge that come with being an Indie Artist. I felt a need to empower Indie Artist with the knowledge I had gained through the experiences I encountered in the music industry.

~FOREWORD~
The question has been asked to me why are you writing this Handbook? In the early 90’s, I worked with several musicians who composed songs written by me. I had no knowledge about the music industry, so I would write songs lyrics without copywriting them and take them to musicians to help me develop them into songs.
I thought I had found the perfect combination with a musician in whom I worked with previously on several songs. We would work until the songs were finished. We then began to perform these songs in churches and started to gain a small fan base in return. Our goal was to move toward going into the studio. Months went by and we were unsuccessful in securing a studio, let alone a budget to offset the cost. With time passing, he began to pursue other groups with the songs I had written and finally landed a group with a budget to get him into the studio.
This group went forwards and recorded one of my songs. From then on I was driven to find out how I could PROTECT my songs and get the credit for ownership. I felt if this happened to me then it has happened to someone else and to my surprise it has happened to millions and is still happening today.
Now, my efforts are to spread the word to Indie Artist about protecting themselves and how to get all the credit and royalties that they are entitled too.
~ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS~
First I would like to thank God for the vision and opportunity to present this Handbook to all of those who may learn and prosper from these basic principles of the music business however, this is just the beginning of a long journey to help educate Indie Artist about the basic knowledge of the music business. I would also like to thank my DAD and my hero who has always told me to follow what I believe THANK YOU. To my God Mother Ms. Maple Reddrick who has assisted and educated me throughout the years to guide other Indie Artist in the right direction, I would like to say THANK YOU.
To my bro in whom I had the pleasure of meeting in 2005 Mr. Yassim Ali, together we almost climbed the mountain of building an independent community, but the journey continues. To all of those who have come along my path that have participated in my many workshops and seminars, those that allowed me to present my views on panel discussions, and all those who participated in my one on one consultations and to those that I may have forgotten THANK YOU.
Our hopes is that you will be enlighten to start stepping in the right direction once you apply the steps in this handbook , and that you may share this information with others who may struggle from the lack of knowledge.
We are always available for consultation, our networking partners are always on stand- by waiting to assist Indie Artist in whatever your needs maybe, so don’t think that you are alone we are here to help you fulfill your CREATED DESTINY.
~AN ARTIST PROSPECTIVE~
Through the use of this handbook we would like to help each & every artist understand the basic knowledge of the music industry. You can achieve your goals by applying tools of knowledge that would guide you to a path of success and longevity.
Success and longevity involves continued learning which means as an Indie Artist you become "ME INC." This means you become a one man company, not only an artist but also the street team, business manager, marketing agent, radio promoter, and promotions manager. Why all of these hats you might ask? Starting out you may not have the budget to pay all of these individuals but the work must still get done.
~INTRODUCTION~
I have held many workshops and have talked to many Indie Artist all over the world who have the same issues: they cannot get radio airplay, can’t produce sales for their project, not getting credit for sales they produce, not properly registered, and most of all don't understand basic principles of the music industry.
How can you avoid the pitfalls that most Indie Artist suffer? Have you received any royalties for radio airplay, c.d. sales, or internet sales? Do you understand how to market and how to promote your c.d.? My c.d. is in the store, online for sale, but no results? WHY?
Traditionally, the music industry was created for major financial companies to profit from the sales of albums being sold. Promoting fame and glory to capture other talented singers and musicians who would become part of a trend that would and still produce hundreds of artist either filing bankruptcy or leaving them owning the record company monies that many artist can never pay back.
Being destroyed for the lack of knowledge is a true statement. In this new age movement the world of the Indie Artist are no longer the minority but the majority can take control of your destiny by being empowered with the knowledge of the music business’s basic principles. In this new day Indie Artist are not pursuing big labels to be signed, they are doing the work to be self discovered. Yet there are those Indie Artist that still struggle with areas of moving in the right direction, and I like to call these artists “S.A”. which means, STRUGGLING ARTIST.

SO LET’S GET STARTED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!!
SET GOALS FOR YOUR PROJECT
A. Build a solid foundation by registering with the proper affiliates.
B. What is your targeted market?
C. Plan a marketing strategy.
D. How much of a budget do you have for marketing and promotions?
E. How do you plan to get attention of radio programmers?
Build a solid foundation by registering with all the proper affiliates. Most Indie Artist rob themselves of potential royalties due to the lack of knowledge on how to properly register their songs with these organizations designed to protect artist from songs sharks.

Copyright & Performing Rights Societies
Register a recorded work with The Library of Congress Copyright Office. This is where you copyright your songs. Use the appropriate forms for the type of copyright you need. The website to download forms is:

If the musical or dramatic work that you are registering has been recorded as a disk you may choose either copyright application FORM PA (Performing Arts) or FORM SA (Sound Recordings) depending on the purpose of registration. Use Form PA to register the underlying musical composition or dramatic work. Form SR has been developed specifically to register a "Sound Recording" as defined by Copyright Act-a work resulting from the "fixation of a series of sounds" separate and distinct from the underlying musical or dramatic work. Form SR should be used when copyright claim is limited to the sound recording itself.
1. File a Form PA if you are seeking to register the musical or dramatic work not the "sound recording" even though what you deposit for copyright purposes may be in the form of a phonorecord.
2. File a Form PA if you are seeking to register the audio portion of an audio-visual work such as a motion picture soundtrack; these are considered integral parts of the audio-visual work.
3. File a Form SR if you are seeking to register the "sound recording" itself ,that is the work that results from the fixation of a series of musical spoken or other sounds , but not the underlying musical or dramatic work.
4. File a Form SR if you are seeking the copyright claimant for both the underlying musical or dramatic work and the sound recording, and you prefer to register both on the same form.
5. File both forms PA and SR if the copyright claimant for underlying work and sound recording differ or you prefer to have separate registration for the
6. Register with ASCAP (American Society of Composer, Author’s and Publisher’s) OR B.M.I (Broadcast Music Incorporation) as a writer and publisher.
