About the Authors
JAMES F. KRILE is the director of the Blandin Community Leadership Program (BCLP). Since 1985, over four thousand people from rural Minnesota have taken part in this program, which includes a five-day residential retreat and two follow-up workshops. In an independent evaluation of the program, John F. Jones, PhD, of the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work described BCLP “as a model for training anywhere in the world.”

Jim’s academic background is in sociology with an emphasis on organizational and community development. Before joining the Blandin Foundation in 1986, Jim was a member of the Department of Rural Sociology, University of Minnesota; the Center for the Study of Local Government, St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN; and the Center for Community Organization and Area Development, Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD.

GORDY CURPHY is the president of Curphy Consulting Corporation (C 3 ), a leadership and organizational change consulting firm with a clientele of major corporations. His work with C 3 includes consulting to develop an organizational vision, align strategies in support of the vision, and identify and develop the talent and teams needed to realize the vision. Prior to starting his own company, Gordy was the vice president of Institutional Leadership for the Blandin Foundation where he was responsible for the design, delivery, and evaluation of comprehensive leadership and organizational development programs; a vice president and general manager for Personnel Decisions International (PDI); and on active duty in the U.S. Air Force. As a tenured associate professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Gordy coauthored the number one selling leadership textbook, Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience.

A native of Two Harbors, MN, and a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Gordy also received an MA from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX, and a PhD in industrial and organizational psychology from the University of Minnesota.

Thye. He is the author of thirty-nine books, including Lessons in Leadership: Mostly Learned the Hard Way and Our Historic Upper Mississippi . He is the first-named honoree in the Dr. Duane R. Acknowledgments
T his book is an outgrowth of the dedication and leadership of many people. First and foremost, it is inspired by and grounded in the experience and wisdom of the more than 4,000 leaders who have participated in the Blandin Community Leadership Program (BCLP). However, BCLP would not have been initiated in 1985 and sustained to the present were it not for the courage and commitment of the Blandin Foundation Trustees and administration. And of course, the content of BCLP—from which most of this book is taken—is the product of an ever-evolving, highly talented team who make excellence seem almost commonplace.

Special thanks go to Cindy Wilcox, who contributed the tool, “Building Social Capital Across Cultures”; Geralyn Sheehan, who produced the “Identifying Community Assets” tool; and Randy Gagne, who provided “Accessing Community Data.”

Many people read drafts of this book during its development: Doni Blumenstock, Jane Garthson, Vaughn Grisham, Michael Kinsley, Carol Lukas, Jeffrey Nelson, Dick Senese, Janice Walker, Diane Wanner, and Richard Woo. Much gratitude is owed to these people, who took the time to thoroughly read the manuscript, raise provocative questions, and offer practical suggestions that greatly improved this book.

Thanks as well to the people who helped prepare this book. Karen Heikkila and Terri Dufner tirelessly typed numerous versions of this manuscript. Being able to edit the words of others while maintaining the integrity of their thought is a rare gift. Those who wrote and those who will read this book are beneficiaries of that gift, which was so skillfully displayed by Vince Hyman, Doug Toft, and Terri Hudoba. Finally, thanks to Kirsten Nielsen, whose design skills give life to the printed page.
