Insights from Chapter 1

#1

I first met Trump in 2004 to discuss his New Jersey casinos. I enjoyed working with him, and Atlantic City proved to be a good investment for him. However, no lawyer could make Atlantic City profitable.

#2

I suffered a loss when my father passed away. I was extremely close with him, and he was the one who taught me about the Jewish faith. I observed seven days of shiva for him.

#3

I have maintained a friendship with Donald Trump because I saw in him the potential for great things. I noticed how much he loved his children, and how much he wanted to give them the best life possible.

#4

I once represented Donald Trump in litigation, and I was able to get my client more money than he was offering the other side. I received a third of the excess money.

#5

I had earned Donald's respect as a lawyer and a person. I had won for him time and time again, but I did so playing by the rules and being faithful to my principles. Apparently, I was somewhat unique among his many legal advisers.

#6

I was extremely good at representing Donald Trump, and I never lost a case involving him. Some of the wins were improbable, but they contributed to the high esteem in which I was held.

#7

When I advised Trump, he was just a real estate mogul, not unlike many of my other high-profile clients. But when he was in the White House, he had almost single-handedly performed the impossible: winning the presidency with no prior political experience.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

I had a very happy home, but there was always a tinge of sadness that I sensed from my parents. I understood that beneath their surface happiness, they were very sad about the fact that their relatives died in the Holocaust.

#2

The 1973 Yom Kippur War was another watershed event in my life. I was in synagogue listening to my father lead the services when he announced that he would be accepting pledges from the pulpit to the Israel Emergency Fund, to be paid in full the next day. He raised the money, despite many murmuring from the congregation.

#3

Many American Jews in the early 20th century were anti-Zionist, and saw support for Israel as an impediment to their assimilation into American society. They saw no particular religious imperative to Jewish sovereignty over the land of Israel, even if it was the biblical homeland promised by God to the Jewish people in the Bible.

#4

My father, a rabbi, was the only one to host a sitting president in his synagogue and at his home for a meal. He was in favor of West Bank settlement construction, though he used different phrasing than the biblical term Judea and Samaria.
