DEDICATION (FROM LESLIE)
First and foremost, to the brave men and women in the military and their families who also serve. They understand that freedom isn’t free and they pay the price to keep us safe.
To my parents, Sharon and Jerry Nelson, thanks for teaching me so many important le ssons.
To my nieces and nephews, who remind me every day not to take myself too seri ously.
God bless yo u all.
DEDICATION (FROM STEPHANIE)
To my kiddos, David, Luke, Tyler, Joey and Kasey. You inspire me in everything I do! I love you all very much!
To my best friend and the best person I know, Chad. Thank you for every bit of support you’ve given me. We’ve created the most extraordinary thing together: our f amily.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I’d like to acknowledge the work of Dr. Claude Steiner who has authored numerous articles and books about Transactional Analysis (TA) and, specifically, emotional literacy. Although TA was developed by Dr. Eric Berne, Dr. Steiner made the principles of TA readily accessible to millions of people through his writing. He first coined the terms “warm fuzzy” and “cold prickly” in 1969 in the children’s fable A Warm Fuzzy Tale.
I’d also like to acknowledge the writings of Alvyn M. Freed, Ph.D. Dr. Freed brought the concept of TA to life for children and teens in such books as T. A. for Tots and Other Prinzes and T.A. for Teens.
A huge thank you to the illustrator, and my sister-in-law, Stephanie Nelson. I can’t draw so without her the book would be filled with stick people with misshapen heads! Stephanie also read the draft and made suggestions; as a military mom, her input was inval uable.
To everyone at Inspiring Voices Publishing who made this book possible, thank you, thank you, than k you!
INTRODUCTION
T. A. for Military Kids is intended to help military kids understand common feelings associated with being a kid and, more specifically, to identify feelings that accompany the unique aspects of being a military kid. It’s designed to be read to the child by an adult, preferably a parent, and to stimulate a frank discussion with the child about his/her experiences and feelings as a military kid. There are questions posed throughout the pages that will help kids think about what goes on inside their heads and to understand that their thoughts and feelings are normal. The questions also raise topics that kids may be hesitant to discuss, particularly with their parents, or that they may not have the language to describe. Another important use of questions in general: with all kids, particularly younger ones, asking questions when they are upset or angry can help distract their minds, having a refocusing and calming effect.
