Introduction
Dramatic Shorts is a theatrical writing platform showcasing new work from various playwrights ranging from “aspiring” to “established”. The platform, created by James Quince, allows writers wishing to publish their work, for the theatre, can do so to get their talent recognized and seen by many people from the general public to theatres and industry professionals. The book contains various amounts and varieties of monologues, duologues and short plays by different writers in many different styles, lengths, genres and subject matters. The reason why Dramatic Shorts was created is so that more theatrical writing talent can be published and seen, due to the fact that submitting plays to theatres and theatre companies can be very competitive and only a certain percentage succeed. Dramatic Shorts aims to give writers a fighting chance in this competitive industry.
“The idea for this platform pretty much came from the need for more exposure for writers. I’ve come across many talented writers and they all have one thing in common: the difficulty to get noticed nowadays. As I’m a writer myself, I notice this difficulty. Writers will most likely have shorter pieces such as monologues and individual scenes already written but don’t count for much since most theatres and theatre companies only want full-length plays, and so they just get left in the “bottom draw” so to speak. However, I’ve also noticed that those individual pieces still portray the talent of the writer: showing amazing potential for narration, characters, stories and so on, and then I thought “why not put these short pieces on show? They clearly credit the writer!”. Then came Dramatic Shorts! Plus, I firmly believe that these monologues, duologues and short plays could potentially develop into much bigger productions, therefore, creating many performance opportunities! ” – James Quince, Founder, ‘Dramatic Shorts’.
All monologues, duologues and short plays featured in ‘Dramatic Shorts: Volume One’ are available for public performances.

Writers
James Quince
James Quince is a British actor, comedian and writer. In 2012, he graduated from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, UK with a BA (Hons) Drama degree. In the same year (with others from his university) he co-wrote, co-directed, co-produced and co-starred in a comedy sketch show that featured in the Camden Fringe Festival called ‘Fans of Comedy’, and since then, he has continued to write and perform comedy. As a writer, James’ style falls mainly in the dramatic and comic genres. Having many literary influences: he particularly loves the work of William Shakespeare. His pieces in this edition mark his publishing debut, and ‘The Unwanted Visitor’ is influenced by the style of Harold Pinter.
Sean Lang
Sean Lang combines playwriting with his other great love, history. He has taught it in schools and colleges and explores it through his writing because the people of the past matter just as much as the people of today. As well as the scripts included here, he has written plays about the American Revolution, Shelley’s expulsion from Oxford during the Napoleonic Wars and a new adaptation of Hermann Melville’s ‘Billy Budd’. He is also interested in religious themes and sits on the publications committee of Radius, the religious drama society. His plays ‘Do Not Be Afraid’ and ‘The King Must Die’ were both broadcast on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. His next projects include a short play about the outbreak of the First World War and a longer one about the case of the ghosts of Versailles.
Lindsey McAuley
Relatively new to writing, but as an actor and educational role-player – as well as having been a live historical interpreter and an enabler for an integrated drama group – she is no stranger when it comes to scripts. After completing the courses ‘Creative Writing’ and ‘Start Writing Plays’ with the Open University, Lindsey applied her understanding of scripts to her own debut play ‘Brittle Women’ which went on to win numerous awards at drama festivals including, ‘First Prize’, ‘Best New Play’ and ‘Audience Appreciation’. Lindsey is currently in her final year of the Writing and Film Studies BA (Hons) degree at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK, at the end of which, she hopes to apply her newfound writing skills in a therapeutic capacity as well as continuing to write drama.
Anna Moloney
Graduated from Kingston University with B.A (Hons) Drama degree, she has a great passion for drama and the arts. At 21, Anna hopes to begin her career in writing and producing for future productions in Dublin and London. Having already co-founded a successful theatre company ‘EVE theatre’, she is striving for her individual work to be as accomplished as the work produced under ‘EVE’. ‘A New Life’ is Anna’s debut play; it was performed in two renowned English theatre festivals (I.Y.A.F and Camden Fringe Festival).
Jennifer Matthews
Jennifer Matthews is a theatre director, actor, producer, writer and northerner. Recently graduated with her BA (Hons) Drama degree, these are Jennifer’s premier publications. ‘Hedgehog Pie’ is inspired by a short story from her Taid and she hopes it makes her Gran laugh. ‘A-Z’ is inspired by her move to the big city.
Zoe Bloss
After recently graduating from Kingston University, Zoe works in both acting and writing. She has trained with the National Youth Theatre and the National Youth Film Academy, and has performed at venues such as Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Wembley Stadium. She was also one of the founding members of ‘EVE Theatre Company’ and worked with them for over a year, performing, directing and writing new work. Her play ‘Disposition’ was originally performed at The Tristan Bates Theatre in 2013 and marks her first publication.
Tom Powell
Tom Powell is an award-winning writer, director and producer. As a writer, he won the OTR National Radio Drama Award for his radio play ‘Old Edward’, and the Cambridge Footlights’ Harry Porter Prize for ‘Cloying’, while earning a First-class degree in Politics and Sociology from the University of Cambridge. He has produced ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ at the Haidan Theatre, Beijing, and ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ on a tour along the East Coast of the US, including performances at MIT, Brown, and New York’s Living Theatre.
