- What is old age often associated with ?
Loss of memory, illness, disease, decrepitude, loss of beauty, of senses, death, regrets, satisfaction, wisdom, experience........ - What is youth often associated with ?
health , beauty, strength , hope, dreams......
- Why do old people sometimes have regrets ?
They have wasted their time, their youth, their capacities....
They didn't do much....
They didn't make their dream come true...
- Do you sometimes think about old age ? death ?....
( Essayer de faire produire des phrases du genre)
I am younger today than tomorrow, but I am older today than yesterday...
The older you get, the closer to death you are......( moral en berne assuré...!)
Pour la séance suivante:
The problem of old age in literature : Can you think of any fictional character who sought eternal youth
or who wanted time to stop ?
What do people do to fight against old age ?
Deuxième séance:
Reformulation méthodique de ce qui a été dit au cours précédent. On peut procéder en donnant la parole à un seul élève qui , avec prise de parole en continu , reformulera une introduction , une description et une interprétation du document présenté au rétroprojecteur. (cahiers fermés) . Si
la classe n'est pas encore habituée à ce genre de reformulation orale, on pourra présenter une ligne directrice
plus ou moins élaborée en mettant des mots clés sur un transparent pour guider la reformulation.
On peut également entreprendre une reformulation plus partagée où les élèves prennent la parole de façon
volontaire et spontanée, mais toujours organisée avec introduction, description (ordonnée) et interprétation
....Dans ce cas là, on pourra également accompagner la classe en leur présentant au rétroprojecteur un shéma
directeur plus ou moins élaboré. Sinon, on veillera à accompagner la reformulation, à l'orienter par un
questionnement "discret". On prendra soin d'amener les élèves à réutiliser les expressions nouvelles et à
réactiver les structures de grammaire adéquates.
On pourra également faire repratiquer l'expression du regret et du souhait de façon plus systématique en proposant l'exercice suivant au rétroprojecteur.

On peut laisser les élèves produire leurs propres énoncés ....si ils ont de l'imagination!

Faire résumer ce qu'ils ont trouvé sur chacun de ces personnages......

have a face -lift .....etc
Dead Poets'Society.
Ce projet pédagogique est destiné à une classe de première. Il porte sur le début du film. Compétences mises en oeuvre: Compréhension orale et expression orale Nombre de séances:5 + le devoir Première séance.
Visionner la première partie du film : générique + le premier jour de la rentrée
( discours du proviseur Mr. Nolan et installation des élèves dans leurs chambres)
Durée : Environ 5 minutes.
Donner aux élèves la fiche de compréhension - (ci dessous) afin qu'ils recherchent des informations sur le lieu ,
l'époque et les personnages.
Dead poets society Answer the following questions about the film.
Time and space.
1. Where and when does the first scene take place ? 2. What sort of school is it ? 3. What are the values on which education is based ? 4. How should the students feel ? Why? 5. Do the students go home every week-end? Why ? 6. What do they have in common ? 7. What is the symbol of the candle ? 8. What can you guess about the education the students get?
The main characters.
Give a brief description of each of them or some characteristics about them. 1. The headmaster : Mr. Nolan. 2. The teacher : Mr. Keating. 3. The students: - Todd Anderson - Neil Perry - Cameron - Stephen Meeks - Charlie Dalton - Knox Overstreet.
Procéder à une mise en commun.
L'objectif de cette première séance est principalement culturel: on essayera d'amener les élèves à mieux connaitre le système scolaire americain. On pourra tenter une rapide comparaison avec les systèmes britannique
et même francais.
Objectif linguistique : le champ lexical de l'école:
a private school / a public school (GB) / a state school / a boarding school / boarders / a term / a school year / to
sit an exam / to pass an exam / to fail an exam / to graduate from Welton Academy / a room mate / to wear a
uniform ......etc.
Généralement, la mise en commun et la prise de notes necéssitent un certain temps : On peut traiter les huit
premières questions. Les personnages devront être repris à la séance suivante.
Pour le cours suivant : on demandera aux élèves d'être capables de reformuler ce qu'ils savent sur Welton Academy. On peut même les envoyer visiter le site internet de l'école. Ils voient ainsi que la réalité et la fiction ne sont pas aussi éloignées qu'on pourrait le croire.

Deuxième séance: Objectifs linguistiques: Réactivation du passif : they are asked to / they are made to ...
Réactivation de l'expression du contraste : whereas / unlike / contrary to..
1. Phase de réactivation de la séance précédente Visionnement de l'extrait de la première séance Reformulation rapide des renseignements obtenus sur Welton Académy Mise en commun rapide ( avec arrêt sur image) des renseignements collectés sur les différents personnages.
2. Etude de l'extrait suivant
On visionnera l'extrait suivant qui comporte le premier jour de classe: les trois différents cours de maths, latin, et physique ainsi que le début du cours de Mr Keating (jusqu'au moment où il leur dit qu'ils peuvent l'appeler "Captain ! O my Captain")
Avant la projection , donner la tâche suivante:
What are the students asked to do in every lesson ?
What is the difference between Mr Keating's lesson and the other teachers' ?
On procédera à une mise en commun des réponses trouvées en essayant d'orienter la production des élèves vers des phrases au passif afin de souligner l'impuissance des élèves de Welton Academy
In Latin, they are made to repeat after the teacher without really thinking / they are very passive... In Mathematics, they are given a lot of homework for the next lesson / they are not allowed to complain... In Physics, they are threatened : If they don't hand their homework in time, they will be penalized
one point .
In all those subjects, they are made to work hard, to learn by the book.....
Pour la deuxième question , d'abord faire une liste de ce que Keating demande à ses élèves de faire, puis
ensuite , demander aux élèves d' exprimer des différences, des contrastes...avec les autres professeurs. On devrait aboutir à des productions du genre: There is a sharp contrast between Mr. Keeting 's lesson and the other teachers'
Unlike the Latin teacher who makes them repeat after him without thinking,
Mr Keating asks his students to think by themselves.
Contrary to the Physics teacher who threatens the students, Mr Keating wants them to feel
at ease and to call him " Captain ! O my Captain"
In Latin , the students are very passive whereas in Mr Keating's class they are asked to be active, to do
things.....etc...
On pourra visionner une deuxième fois cet extrait des différentes leçons du premier jour en s'arrêtant sur image
afin d'analyser la symbolique des envolées d'oiseaux et des horloges au début de ce deuxième extrait ainsi qu' à la fin de l'extrait précédent (quand Todd Anderson remonte son réveil et met l'alarme pour se réveiller le
lendemain).
Reprendre à la fin de l'épisode précédent . Arrêt sur image: What is Todd actually doing ? (setting his alarm clock to get up early the next day)
What time do they actually get up ? What for ?
Why so many birds ?
The students could be compared to those birds.....They all look the same, they all fly in the same
direction . In the same way, the students all wear the same uniform ; they all go down the stairs at the
beginning of the extract ....
On trouvera ici l'occasion parfaite de placer les proverbes:
"Birds of a feather usually flock together"
"The early bird catches the worm"
Essayer d'amener les élèves à une réflexion sur le passage du temps... Why is there a clock at the beginning and the end of the episodes ?
To make them understand that Time flies, that they should not waste their time ....
Si on n'obtient pas de réponse, laisser les élèves y réfléchir....
On peut peut-être interpréter la symbolique de la descente d'escaliers....
Which way are the students going ? they are going downwards....
Where are they going ? to their different lessons..
Is it a pleasant place to go to ?... not really....it's boring , they will suffer ....
So going to their classroom could be assimilated to going to hell
Je sais que pour certains cela sera peut être tiré par les cheveux.......alors ne vous arrachez pas le peu qu'il vous reste et laissez tomber si tel est votre opinion....
Pour la prochaine séance, les élèves devront être capables de reformuler les différences entre les différents cours
en utilisant des structures variées (unlike / contrary to / whereas / but)
Troisième séance: Mr. Keating's lesson.

1. Phase de réactivation
On réactivera brièvement les différences entre les leçons de latin , maths, physique et le cours de littérature de
Mr. Keating.
2. Etude du nouvel extrait
Visionnement de l'extrait:
On reprendra le cours de Mr Keating tout au début (dès son entrée en classe) et on visionnera tout le cours bien que cette séance porte surtout sur le début de la leçon .
Avant de visionner l'extrait donner la consigne suivante aux élèves:
Watch the film and make a list of what Mr Keating does in his first lesson.
How do the students feel / react ? Why ?
Mr Keating whistles in class / leaves the classroom /
asks his students to follow him to the main hall
introduces himself /tells them to call him Captain if they are daring enough asks one of them to read a poem / makes fun of them (of their names) asks them some questions / wants them to be active `
asks them to look at old photos of former students / to think by themselves ...
How do the students feel and react ?

They can't help giggling/ laughing nervously

On veillera à faire rebrasser les deux structures en reprenant la liste des actions de Mr Keating .....on attirera
l'attention des élèves sur ces deux constructions .......qui sont souvent source d'erreurs pour les élèves.
Quatrième séance: Mr. Keating's first lesson

La projection dans l'avenir avec when ....
Réactivation des structures : It's the first time / they are not used to doing .....
1. Phase de réactivation
On fera reformuler les réactions des élèves au premier cours de Mr. Keating en prenant soin de réutiliser les
tournures mises en oeuvre lors de la séance précédente.
2. Etude de la deuxième partie du cours de Mr. Keating
On visionnera à nouveau tout le cours de Mr. Keating même si cette séance porte principalement sur la fin du cours de Littérature et surtout sur le poème "To virgins to make much of time "
On pourra procéder par étapes:
1. Expliquer pourquoi Mr Keating demande à ses élèves de l'appeler "Captain O my Captain"
2. On veillera à expliquer pourquoi les noms Pitts et Meeks prêtent à sourire
He makes fun of their names. Why ?
How do the students react when Keating asks Pitts to read the first stanza of the poem ?

This is a poem dedicated to Virgins . Though they are only boys in the class, Mr them to study that poem...He makes fun of them....he is rather ironical

Faire découvrir le symbolisme de "rosebuds" "the same flower "
Faire reformuler en anglais moderne

Why ? What will happen tomorrow ? Tomorrow it will be too late / Tomorrow, they will grow old / they will be dying
4. Amener les élèves à produire des phrases du type: When they grow old,they will have regrets if they have not fulfilled their life It will be too late for them to make their dream come truewhen they are old.

La projection dans l'avenir avec when est une reprise puisque cela a été abordé dans l'étude du document visuel. Néanmoins il sera sans doute nécessaire de faire repratiquer cette construction de façon intensive.....et pour cela donner l'exercice qui suit à faire à la maison .

Cinquième séance : la fin du premier cours de Mr. Keating
1. Phase de réactivation
Faire reformuler pourquoi il se moque de leurs noms, en quoi la situation est ironique et l'explication du poème
étudié.
Corriger l'exercice donné en travail à la maison.
2. Fin de l'extrait.
Visionner la fin de la leçon (quand il demande à ses élèves de scruter les photos des anciens élèves de Welton
jusqu'à la sortie du cours)
Consigne à donner aux élèves:
What does Keating ask his students to do ? What advice does he give them ? Why ? What are the similarities between the former students and Mr. Keating's ?
Mise en commun des réponses trouvées:
He asks them to lean over and and look at some photos of former students
They should not waste they time
They should seize the day / be active / do things
They are advised to catch opportunities / to make their dream come true...etc
because tomorrow it will be too late / they will be old / they will be dying ...
What will happen tomorrow ?
(Pour répondre à cette question il faudra sans doute revisionner l'extrait pour que les élèves aillent à la pêche aux
informations )

A partir de cette liste on fera "reformuler en chaine "la suite des évènements de sorte à faire produire aux élèves
des phrases où ils se projettent dans le futur:
Tomorrow , it will be too late for them to make their dream come true because
they will stop breathing .
As soon as they stop breathing , they will turn cold. When they turn cold they will die.
Once they have died , they will be buried
When they have been buried they will be food for worms.....
Faire remarquer qu'en anglais on "fertilize the daffodils" alors qu'en françcais on "mange les pissenlits par la
racine"!
Mettre en commun les points communs entre les Anciens de Welton et les élèves présents au cours de Keating.
On pourra amener les élèves à une petite discussion ( si le temps le permet) What is old age associated with in this episode ? What is youth associated with ?
Does Mr. Keating believe in life after death ?
