Dissemination of Scientific and Technical Knowledge Unit
European Community support for research and technological development (RTD) ¡s centred on a series of Framework
Programmes, which define the focal areas for activities to be undertaken, and provide the funds necessary for their
execution. The dissemination of information is seen to be an integral part of the research process, and has been carried out
partly by the specific RTD programmes and partly through centralised actions known as the VALUE programme, which also
cover measures to aid the exploitation and utilisation of the research results.
The Dissemination of Scientific and Technical Knowledge Unit of DG XIII/D-2 is responsible for operating the part of the
VALUE programme concerned with the dissemination of information on Community RTD activities and their results, and
the promotion of the uptake and application of these results. This is achieved through a variety of publications, and
electronically through the CORDIS (Community Research and Development Information Service) databases. The Unit also
manages the RTD Help Desk which offers assistance in locating sources of detailed information (such as publications and
contact persons) concerning the research activities of the EC. Enquiries are accepted by letter, telephone or fax.
Regular news and information updates are provided by a variety of publications, including annual and sectoral catalogues of
RTD publications, a guide to sources of information on Community RTD known as the Infoguide, and the Innovation and
Technology Transfer newsletter, in addition to Euroabstracts.
The VALUE programme finished at the end of 1994. It is being succeeded by a new programme, part of the 1994-98
Framework Programme. The new programme will incorporate the work on the dissemination of research information
which was previously part of VALUE.

Each year the annual index provides a key to all the publications cited in Euroabstracts in the previous twelve months.
These publications include books, technical reports, papers published in scientific and technical periodicals, and
conference presentations. For the past few years, the European Commission has also published an annual
catalogue entitled Research Publications, giving details of the year's output of books and technical reports from the
research and researchrelated programmes, but excluding the journal papers and conference presentations. Since
the annual index covers more than the same ground as Research Publications, the latter has been discontinued this
year, in the interests of economy.
Information on new publications from European Community research and researchrelated programmes is also
available online from the European Commission. Among the databases provided by CORDIS the Community
Research and Development Information Service is RTDPublications. This contains similar bibliographic
information to the monthly issues of Euroabstracts, and is updated every two weeks. The RTDPublications
database currently contains more than 65,000 entries. The complete list of CORDIS databases is:

Vol.32 1994 Annual Index GUIDE TO THE ANNUAL INDEX
The Subject Index contains references to all publications included in Euroabstracts during the year. The following
information is given for each entry: a master accession number, the abstract number from the monthly issues of
Euroabstracts, the title of the item in the original language, followed where appropriate by an English translation
(in square brackets), the names of the authors, and bibliographic details. The Subject Index is ordered according
to the Euroabstracts Subject Matter Classification scheme. This scheme, which acts as a table of contents for the >ς
Subject Index, immediately precedes the Subject Index. ^
C
The Subject Index is followed by three other indexes. The Programme Index cites Community RTD programmes
which have contributed to Euroabstracts during 1994. The entry for each programme gives its name and the Q
Directorate General responsible, together with a list of the titles of publications, referenced to the master 3
accession numbers in the Subject Index. The Titles Index, a new addition to the Annual Index, contains a list of "j
the titles of publications cited in Euroabstracts, grouped by language; these titles are also referenced to the master ^
accession numbers. Finally there is an Author Index, again referring to the master accession numbers in the Subject
V
Index.
Another feature of Euroabstracts is a section containing articles on matters of general interest in each issue. The O
titles of these articles are listed on page v. A table of abstract numbers which may be used to identify the issue
of Euroabstracts containing a particular entry may be found on page iv. "Q
