Waste - 1 Invention and transfer of waste-to-energy technologies, 1978 – 2003 This note is a technical annex to a general report on Invention and Transfer of Climate Change Mitigation Technologies on a Global Scale: A Study Drawing on Patent Data. The complete report can be downloaded at: The note describes the invention and transfer of waste-to-energy technologies in the world between 1978 and 2003. These technologies include solid fuels based on waste; recuperation of heat from waste incineration; production of energy from waste or waste gases; and recuperation of waste heat from exhaust gases. The first section focuses on the number of inventions and gives descriptive statistics on the main inventor countries. Section 2 deals specifically with the international flows of technologies and investigates which countries are the main exporters and importers of waste- to-energy technology. Key points • The number of annual inventions in the waste-to-energy field has grown at a remarkably fast rate in recent years, with the most recent data indicating over 1,100 inventions per year. This is a very dynamic field. • Japan is far and away the most important source of inventions, responsible for approximately two-thirds of all inventions in the 1998-2003 period. • It is a relatively ‘globalised' field, with protection sought in more than one country for 20%-30% of inventions.

Key points The number of annual inventions in the wastetoenergy field has grown at a remarkably fast rate in recent years, with the most recent data indicating over 1,100 inventions per year. This is a very dynamic field. Japan is far and away the most important source of inventions, responsible for approximately twothirds of all inventions in the 19982003 period. It is a relatively ‘globalised’ field, with protection sought in more than one country for 20%30% of inventions. The average number of countries in which a given innovation is patented is relatively stable. Depending on the year, an invention is filed in 1.5 to 2.1 countries on average. Despite increased activity in recent years, emerging economies remain far behind developed economies in terms of both innovation and technology transfers. In 2003, emerging countries produced only 7% of the world inventions.
