Chapter 1
It was a warm summer morning in Whitewater and I was in a peaceful slumber, until I was woken up by the sound of my mother’s soft voice saying, “Rosemary darling, it’s time to get up for training,” as she shook me.
“Nooooo, I don’t want to go,” I whined at my mother like a sleepy little kid that didn’t want to go to school and rolled over dramatically on to my back.
“Rose, this is not how a princess should act. Now, get up and get ready for training,” her once soft voice boomed throughout my room in a demanding tone.
I propped myself up on my elbows and spoke, “Yea, Mom, I know. No princess should talk back, hell don’t even breathe the wrong way.” With that statement, I got up and stormed off into my bathroom to get ready for hell—I mean training.
I made my way to the training room, skipping breakfast, which I’m sure I’ll get yelled at about later. Training felt like it dragged on forever. I don’t really get the point of it, but it was a rule my dad made when I was a baby, so we live by it. Training was almost over, which meant I could go back to sleep and ignore my mom for the day. Don’t get me wrong. I love her to death, but she’s a queen and I’m her daughter so therefore, I must live up to her legacy and high standards, which will be hard for me. God forbid she dies or anything happens to her. I felt a hard kick in my side which pulled me out of my thoughts and pissed me off.
“What the fuck, Mar? That hurt,” I growled out at her.
“Pay attention and stop daydreaming,” she mocked like the three-year-old she is.
“I wasn’t…” I was cut off by my mother rushing into the training room.
“Rosemary, come with me now. I need to speak with you,” she spoke quick and stern, leaving no room for objections. I rolled my eyes, gave Mar a quick hug, and followed after my mother to wherever she was taking me; probably to my death.
“Rose, I’m not going to kill you. You’re my daughter after all,” she sighed.
“Right, I forgot you can read minds. Where are we going anyway, Ma?” I questioned.
“Into the deep west forest. Humans have been spotted lurking around there.”
“Humans on our land? Why would they be over here?” I spoke with confusion lacing my voice.
“To fight, Rose. It’s all they want to do. They want to kill us all off like we’re the reason that their kingdoms are falling apart,” hatred laced her soft voice as she spoke. “Rosemary, when we get there, don’t lose your temper. We don’t want to have the blood of humans on our land right now, okay?” she stated more than asked.
Shortly after, we arrived in the deep west. When they saw us, they charged at us.
“Don’t lose my temper, huh, Ma?” I said with a smirk on my face.
“Oh, shut it, Rose. This isn’t a time for jokes.”
There were hundreds of them and they were coming from every direction, and there were only two of us. I could tell this fight wasn’t going to end well. I could tell by the look on my mother’s face as she took the scene in front of her in.
Chapter 2
“RUN!!!” my mother yelled out as she pushed me off the battlefield and into the woods. “Warn the town that they’re coming and they want our heads,” she said in a shaky voice.
I’d never heard her sound so weak. She sounded so scared that I didn’t want to leave her but I had to. I nodded and let out a loud whimper as my wings ripped through my back. As I flew off to tell the townspeople, I felt something pierce through my right wing. I let out a grunt as my wing healed around the arrow. “That’s going to hurt later,” I mumbled to myself.
“Get that filthy hybrid now!” one of the men screamed out to his men. My mom let out a low deadly laugh.
“She isn’t just some filthy hybrid. She is a princess and one of the strongest hybrids there is,” she spoke in a low voice. She said something else, but I was too far to hear what she said.
I landed in town with my wings covering my body and face, which everyone in the town knows means danger.
“They’re coming and they want to shed blood. Get the warriors and hide everyone else,” I said in a low growl.
“My princess, where is the queen?” one of the townspeople asked in a hushed voice.
“Fighting, my child; but worry not, she will be fine,” I stated in a rough voice, trying not to show that I was unsure of whether or not she would be fine.
I flew back to the battlefield with all different types of abnormals behind me, ready to defend their land.
“We will fight for our land and people, even if we lose a hundred of our men and women!” I screamed as I broke the arrow in my leg and let my wings close as I dropped to the ground. As I did, my eyes met the eyes of a filthy human who was covered in my mother’s blood.
Without thinking, I growled and ran forward, plunging my hand into the human’s chest, ripping his heart out.
“You will pay for what you have done, you useless human,” I roared.
“The princess is quite mad right now,” one of the warriors stated in a shaky voice.
“RUN!” I yelled, because I knew that I couldn’t control my temper. In a blind rage, I began ripping humans apart one by one.
“I will kill you, all of you, for you have shed the blood of my queen and my mother on my own soil. I shall take your families and your friends. I’ll show you a true monster!” I growled.
As the last humans fled the battlefield, I looked around to see hundreds of their people lying on the ground dead. I dropped to my knees and began to recite the poem my mom read to me when I was hurt or sad.
“It will be okay. We’ll see brighter days for you’re going to be okay, my love. I know we’ve shed blood, but we’ve also shown love, so keep your head up, love. I know you’ve had enough, so smile one more time, for you’re okay now, my love.” It was the poem my mother read to me the day we lost my dad and our people lost their king. I soon realized hot tears were pouring down my face. I wiped them away and looked up to see a human girl looking over at me. She began to walk over to me with no fear in her mesmerizing blue eyes that pulled me in and wouldn’t let me go, no matter how hard I tried to look away, I couldn’t. No, stop, she is a human.
“Hi, I’m Emily. I’m sorry about my father ordering our men to kill your people.” She looked down at her feet and spoke so low and soft that I couldn’t hear what she was saying and honestly, it was kind of cute. But I could not wrap my head around why she was talking to me. I introduced myself anyway.
“Rosemary, the Princess of Whitewater, and no need to say sorry for something your father did,” I said in a harsh tone.
“Well, Rosemary, as an apology, I would like to get to know you better,” she said, almost unsure of herself.
“Why? I mean… I would like to get to know you too, Emily, so meet me by the river of singing water lilies. Deal?” I stated in a kind of demanding tone, wanting to get this conversation over with already.
“I want to get to know you because my father says people like you are evil and I don’t believe that, and deal,” she said in a hushed voice, sticking her hand out for me to shake. I shook her hand and gave her a small forced smile, trying to make her feel better because at the end of the day, it’s not her fault my mother is dead.
“Rosemary, this may not be any of my business, but what are you going to do with your mother’s body?”
“Yeah, you’re right. It is none of your business. But since you asked nicely, the kingdom is going to bury her next to my fathe
