The Adventures Begin
Rhodri had got up early on that special Wednesday. At last, at last, it had arrived. It had been a long wait, the longest week he had ever known, but now, it was here. Would it live up to its promise, this Wednesday? Would it change his mind about thinking that, for him, a Wednesday was the worst day of the week?
He jumped out of bed as soon as his eyes had opened. It was so early, so early that Dylan, his dog and best friend, was confused. He looked up from the landing carpet where he was lying and promptly went back to sleep. Rhodri’s mum was also surprised that she didn’t have to call Rhodri three or four times to say that his breakfast was ready. Rhodri was at the table gulping down his porridge before the toast was half ready.

‘What’s the rush today?’ she asked.
‘No rush, not really, it’s just that there’s a sponsored litter gathering in the playground before the school bell rings and the one who collects most gets points for their school house.’
Rhodri turned his head away from his mother in case she saw, by his face, that he was fibbing. Dylan had now decided to join them and was quickly eating his breakfast from his bowl near the back door. In no time at all, Rhodri grabbed his bag, gave his mum a kiss and was at the front door before she finished her boiled egg. Dylan was at his heels.
‘Well I never,’ she said. ‘This is a day to remember, you dashing off to school. Have a good day and good luck with the litter picking.’
Oh, this was going to be a good day, Rhodri could feel it. He ran all the way to the waterfall with Dylan racing ahead of him, also excited, but not quite sure why. They got there in no time, but
