The prints run parallel to the east fence before veering back toward the street. Too deliberate for a jogger. Too spaced for a single man. The snow has begun melting at the edges, which means somebody stood close enough to count the cars in the driveway while the family gathered inside.
Raffaele learned at seventeen that a man who cannot reach his weapon in under two seconds is already dead.
In the main hall, thirty-two capos, consiglieres and soldiers stand in clusters with whiskey in hand. Antonio Corvinelli enters at seven sharp, leaning on a cane that is entirely a prop. What he has come to announce is not put to a vote.
*"He's agreed to a union. Chiara Vitali. To you, Raffaele."*
April. Enzo Vitali signs over control of all Vitali holdings as her dowry, and she carries them into the Corvinelli family.
Chiara is standing in her father's study while he folds a handkerchief before the bloodstain has fully dried. He tells her he is dying in the same voice he would use to report that the market closed down twelve points, and that he will not leave her unprotected. He hands her a folder she does not open, and an instruction: Friday, the Gardenia Club, wear blue.
She runs the restaurants and the real estate. She holds the power of attorney. And the men around that table have already worked out what she is. Matteo says it aloud. *"She's a girl. She'll fold."*
Raffaele's answer is that the Vitali name has held Brooklyn for forty years, and you do not simply take territory like that.
What neither house says out loud is the arithmetic underneath the wedding. A loan of three hundred thousand against a dying man's restaurants, ballooned toward half a million, and the rival holding company that has been circling those holdings like a shark for three years. Under that sits an older grudge, about a grandfather, a territory, a wife and a gutter.
Inside the walls, somebody is passing information out.
It ends with a rifle on a third floor with *For Lorenzo* engraved above the grip, a frightened boy who gets a broken wrist instead of a bullet, and a woman walking back into her own ballroom with blood on her dress to finish the dance.
A closed-door mafia romance about an arranged marriage, an inherited debt, and a bride who was never the least dangerous person at the table.
