Uncle Jadoo
Look! said Vayu, holding up an envelope. It s a note from Uncle Jadoo.
Read it! Read it! said his sister Deeya, jumping up and down in excitement.
Vayu carefully opened the note and read:
Dear children, come visit me tomorrow. I have something to show you.

Yayy! Maybe, it s a new magic trick! shouted Deeya, pushing her hair off her face. Oh, I can t wait to see him.
Me too! said Vayu. Uncle Jadoo is cool!
He sure is! Remember what happened once when he came to pick us up from school? He looked around and said, Let s liven up this place!
And pulled out a cute little monkey from my bag! finished Vayu, laughing.
Oh yes! And when my teacher Miss Sourpuss saw it, she ran and clambered up a tree! giggled Deeya.

And then, oh man, when the monkey jumped up on a branch next to her
Hee! Hee! Hee! I shall never forget her face! she giggled.
Early next morning, they set off to meet Uncle Jadoo. Vayu slipped into his backpack a reference book on animals and birds, a magnifying glass and his handy-dandy penknife kit, some rope just in case, and a packet of biscuits. He was always hungry!

Soon, they were near Uncle Jadoo s house. It was a big old rambling house. They looked to see if Uncle Jadoo was somewhere in the garden. They gazed at the windows, just in case he was hiding there to surprise them with some crazy new trick, but the windows were shut. They walked on and reached the house.
Vayu pulled a rope that was attached to a big bell. Clang! Clang! No response. Then again. Clang! Clang! Clang!
That s strange! said Vayu. Where is he? Vayu pushed the door. It slowly swung open.
Walking in, they called out, Yoo-hoo! Uncle Jadoo, where are you?
Still no reply.
This is very strange. It s just not like Uncle Jadoo to invite us and then disappear, said Vayu.
Maybe he is creating a new disappearing act, said Deeya, her eyes lighting up. Maybe he is hiding somewhere and will suddenly pop up out of thin air to surprise us. Maybe, that s why he has asked us to come over, to check out his new act! Her words were tumbling out one after the other. After all, he is the best magician in the world!
Maybe , if you stay quiet for a few seconds then we can Vayu stopped. Hey, what s this? He walked to a picture of Uncle Jadoo in his magician s robe and pulled out a note that was jutting out from the frame.
Read it, read it! said Deeya.
Vayu opened it and read it aloud.
Dear Vayu and Deeya, At the rear Do not fear All is clear! Signed Your loving Uncle Jadoo
Do you think it is some kind of a hide and seek game? asked Deeya hopefully.
I don t think so. It s a very strange note. Vayu was thoughtful.
Oh no-oo! Deeya clasped her hands to her mouth. Do you think he is in trouble?
Perhaps he is. I get the feeling he is trying to tell us something.
But why is he being so secretive? wailed Deeya.
Well, we will have to figure it out. So far, we know that there is something at the rear that we do not have to be afraid of, muttered Vayu. I just don t get it.
Me too! I wish he would not talk in riddles, Deeya grumbled.
Vayu stared at the paper. Hey, Deeya, do you remember, once when we asked him where he kept his magic objects, he told us that he had a special room in the rear of the house?
Yes, of course I remember. I always wanted to try and find it.
And then, when I asked him if it was scary, he said there was nothing in there to be afraid of.
Yes! Yes!
I think perhaps, he wants us to find his studio, said Vayu slowly.
