Radioactivity is released in effluents from
nuclear power plants and their supporting
fuel cycle facilities. Methods have been
developed by which the radiological im
pact on man of these releases can be as
sessed. These methods rely on data from
field and laboratory studies concerned
with radionuclide and stable element dis
tribution and transport in both terrestrial
and aquatic ecosystems. The data from
these studies have been published in a wide
range of journals and reports from research
institutions over a period of several decades.
The present work presents a systematic and
critical review of the data and gives guide
lines for their use in assessments of the im
pacts of routine releases of radioactive ef
fluents.
This work is being published as a series of
volumes. Volumes 1 and 2 cover major
fission and activation products respective
ly, while volume 3 covers a variety of major
metabolites and related elements. Further
volumes cover the major actinide elements.
The scope and detail of the volumes in this
series is such that it is likely to become a
standard reference work for those who are
concerned with the study and regulation
of radioactivity in the environment. It will
also be a useful source of data for those
concerned with the distribution and trans
port of a variety of stable environmental
pollutants.
