In the process, tailings from deep cone thickeners, which contain typically 65% mineral matter (dry basis), 24% coal (dry basis) and 45 to 55% water (as received) are sprayed onto the top of a fluidised bed operating at a superficial fluidising velocity of 1.2 m/s and a temperature of 800 C. The feedstock has a calorific value in the region of 7500 kJ/kg (as received) and generally more than half the solids are sized less than 45 μπι.
