Nos abuelos—our grandparents—are not just old folks in our family. They are great sources of stories about the history of your family and your community, and have wisdom and skills to share with you. Read on to learn more about grandparents in general, and yours in particular.
Know your grandparents
If you are lucky, some or all of your grandparents are still alive. You have at least four: your mother’s parents and your father’s parents. If any of your grandparents re-married, you may have more than four people you can call abuelo and abuela!
What are their names? What were the grandmothers’ names before they got married? Where were they born, and when? They have led long, interesting lives while your life is just getting started. They may have things to share with you from their experiences that will make your own life richer and more interesting.

Hispanic grandparents
In the United States, almost twenty percent of the population is Hispanic—over fifty-five million Hispanics! Among them are millions and millions of abuelos and abuelas, and within Hispanic family traditions, they are very important.
