This will be the first book to explore and extend Scotland’s gang typology beyond the overly fixative gaze of recreational youth gangs and identify those gangs operating within the realms of organised crime. It will be the only to explore (with a Scottish lens) how gang organisation often results in a certain criminal trajectory, and subsequent gang activity, being carried out in accordance with the stage the gang finds themselves at and will shed light upon the highly complex and intertwined nature of those criminal activities in which gangs engage.
Drawing upon unique empirical data based on interviews with high-profile ex-offenders and experts, this book sheds new light on drug markets and gangs in the UK. The study shows how traditional methods of tackling gang violence fail to address the intertwined nature of those criminal activities which can overlap with other organised crime spheres. McLean sparks new debate on the subject, offering solutions and alternatives.
