The Conquest of Makkah: The Description of the Prophet’s Entry Into Makkah

Aishah said that during the year of the Conquest, the Prophet entered Makkah through Kada, at the upper part of the city. Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated on the authority of Anas Ibn Malik that on the day of the Conquest, the Prophet entered Makkah wearing a helmet on his head. When he took it off, a man came and said, Ibn Khatal is clinging to the curtain of the Kabah. The Prophet said, Kill him.

Al-Bukhari also narrated on the authority of Abdullah Ibn Mughaffal, who said, I saw the Messenger of Allah on the day of the Conquest of Makkah, seated on his she-camel, reciting Surat Al-Fath in a vibrant, quivering tone. Muawiyah later remarked, Were I not afraid that people would gather around me, I would recite in that same tone, imitating the Messenger of Allah.

The Muslims had been ordered not to cause any harm unless someone tried to stop them from entering. Yet according to Ibn Ishaq, Safwan Ibn Umayyah, Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl, and Suhail Ibn Amr had gathered men at Al-Khandama to resist. When the Muslims under Khalid arrived, a skirmish followed in which several men on both sides were killed before the polytheists took to flight. The Messenger of Allah had instructed his commanders to fight only those who resisted, sparing the city itself the violence that had marked its earlier conflicts with the young Muslim community.

The Prophet remained in Makkah for a number of days afterward, during which he issued rulings on matters that had accumulated across years of exile, addressing questions of property, blood-debts from the pre-Islamic period, and the standing of those who had once driven him from the city.
