This book was born in a breakfast meeting with Dr. Towns several years ago. We are friends, and I had him speak to my people during our prayer meeting in 1978. Dr. Towns told me he wanted to be more godly and to have more power in prayer. At that breakfast meeting he asked me, “How would you advise me to be more effective in prayer?”
I told him, “Each day I pray the rounds. Like a runner who jogs around and around a race track to get physically fit, I pray the rounds several times each day.”
Dr. Towns knows church history, so he knew what I meant. To pray the rounds daily is to pray the Lord's Prayer several times each day.
I believe when a person sincerely prays the Lord's Prayer each day, that person has covered the basic ways to worship God, and the basic ways to grow and protect his or her spiritual life. Like seed within fruit, the Lord's Prayer contains every requirement for which a Christian may pray each day.
I told Dr. Towns to pray the Lord's Prayer several times at the beginning of each day. once is not enough. I told him to emphasize a different petition each time he prayed the Lord's Prayer.
When people pray the Lord's Prayer, they have covered every type of petition that will touch every aspect of their lives. That doesn't mean they have prayed for every need in their lives. It doesn't mean they have finished praying. After I pray the Lord's Prayer each day, I spend two hours a day in prayer touching many other requests.
