Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow. Helen Keller
Some people have saidthat when we are anxious, we are living in the future. Facing the future and the unknown often creates concerns, worries, and fears about what might happen and losses that might occur. Someone has mentioned that fear is the darkroom in which negatives are developed. Depression, on the other hand, occurs when we live in the past. e memories of troubling events and relationships can resurface, and we can recall or relive our hurts, losses, and grief over and over. e unfairness of what people have said or done, or the situations they created, often produce anger, bitterness, and unforgiveness. Our inability to change the past and get relief, restitution, or revenge drives us into the pit of despair. e cloud of depression darkens, it lowers on us, and we lose perspective in life. A common thread runs through anxiety and depression. ese emo-tions seem to arise when we attempt to gain control of what we cannot always control…the past or the future. Our inability to control the events in our lives creates fears and gives rise to anger. Whether we like it or not, the desire to control winds through the fabric of our personalities.

Overcoming Anxiety& Depression
We all want things done the way we would like and in the time we like. When we perceive that things are not going our way, we become fearful, anxious, angry, and depressed. We may even sulk, whine, or throw a temper tantrum in order to exert control over circumstances. e way we perceive life is the key to emotional health. Years ago Rein-hold Neibuhr created what has been called the Serenity Prayer. It contains a perspective on living that helps us overcome anxiety and depression.
God, grant me the serenity To accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time, Enjoying one moment at a time, Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace, Taking, as Jesus did, is sinful world as it is, Not as I would have it, Trusting that He will make all things right If I surrender to His will, at I may be reasonably happy in this life And supremely happy with Him forever in the next.
I began counseling in 1974. Since that time I have spent thousands of hours with people of all ages and from all walks of life. Many of them struggled with anxiety in various forms and depression to one degree or another. e National Institute of Mental Health estimates that more than 40 million adult Americans suffer from anxiety disorders.Another 21 million Americans grapple with depressive disorders.Often anxiety and depression go hand in hand. ey can be two sides to the same coin. I wrote this book because I want to come alongside you if you are dealing with one or both of these issues. I want to encourage you…

To realize that you are not alone. Millions of people are facing the same things you are. To realize that you cannot always stop negative or disrup-tive thoughts from entering your mind. However, you can change these thoughts and refuse to let them overcome you. e famous reformer Martin Luther said, “You cannot
