He rejected high titles that were ascribed to him and preferred calling himself the herald (announcer) of the coming of Jesus Christ. He further revealed one of the purposes of his baptism. He said that through it, the Lamb of God was to be revealed to Israel (1: 31). Indeed, when Jesus was being baptized, there was a testimony from heaven. Both the Father and the Holy Spirit showed up on this event. The &ĂƚŚĞƌ ƐƉŽŬĞ ƚŚƵƐ͕ ͞dŚŝƐ ŝƐ ŵLJ ^ŽŶ͕ ŝŶ ǁŚŽŵ / Ăŵ ǁĞůů ƉůĞĂƐĞĚ͘͟ The Holy Spirit descended and remained on Him like a dove. Our focus verse today stresses that Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. This idea has some bearing on the Old Testament practices. One such practice was that a person would offer an animal, preferably a lamb, for his/her sins to be covered. In this case, the animal was killed. Here, we have a manifestation of the truth that the wages of sin is death. However, the penalty was transferred to the animal and the sinner continued to live.
