Foreword
I T won’t be until Christians are gathered for eternity in heaven that we will understand and appreciate the ministry of E. M. Bounds. Only then will the vast spiritual influence of his life of prayer be fully felt and I myself will be one of the vast multitudes who gather to express their gratitude.
How many Christians have found hope to press on in faith because this simple man wrote so powerfully from his own heart! And how many pastors, teachers, and evangelists were inspired to approach the throne of grace with boldness because of a preacher whom they never heard deliver a single sermon!
No writer outside of Scripture ever said more in short powerful sentences than E. M. Bounds. In our present day of spiritual murkiness and bland sermonizing from the Bible, we need to listen again to the fiery clarity of this prophet of prayer:
Nothing distinguishes the children of God so clearly and strongly as prayer. It is the one infallible mark and test of being a Christian. Christian people are prayerful, the worldly-minded, prayerless. Christians call on God; worldlings ignore God, and call not on his name. Prayer is the expression of a relation to God, a yearning for divine communion. It is the outward and upward flow of the inward life toward its original fountain. It is an assertion of the soul’s paternity, a claiming of the sonship which links man to the eternal.
E. M. Bounds was born in 1835 and died seventy-eight years later. Although educated as a lawyer, he left his practice at the age of twenty-four to obey God’s call to preach his Word. Although he was the spiritual product of an old-fashioned Methodist/holiness atmosphere, his insight into what really matters in living for Christ transcends any particular denomination or doctrinal setting. He is a man for all ages and his inspired pen stands in stark contrast to the transient novelties of past decades that have misled God’s church away from her only source of power.
The mind and spirit of E. M. Bounds inevitably cause one of two reactions. He is either an inspiration that drives us to God with a fresh sense of our own need or a simplistic, overly emotional fanatic who bothers our lukewarm interpretation of the Christian life. He is never a congenial spiritual backslapper who bids us go on our merry way. Reading E. M. Bounds is like coming near a blazing fire on a cold winter night you either stand near to enjoy its warmth or move away because the flame seems too much to bear.
Only two of his books were in print when Bounds died, but all who knew him personally were aware that he walked with God. A praying man or woman always leaves that distinct impression upon others. As you read these pages, you will have a chance to meet this godly man and be exposed to his radical conviction that Almighty God still loves to hear his people pour out their hearts to him in prayer and has promised to respond with blessing and power. Whether you and I are familiar with this kind of faith is beside the point. The real question is whether it is truth found in God’s Eternal Word. I’m sure you’ll see that it is firmly rooted in Scripture and that is why E. M. Bounds, though dead, still speaks to us today.
Pastor Jim Cymbala The Brooklyn Tabernacle
Publisher’s Preface
F OR almost a century Edward McKendree Bounds’s books on prayer have been classic works, stimulating and inspiring Christians to become prayer warriors. A forceful writer and very deep thinker, Bounds spent the last seventeen years of his life reading, writing, and praying. He rose at 4 A.M. daily for many years and was indefatigable in his study of the Bible.
As breathing is a physical reality to us, so prayer was a reality for Bounds. He took the command, “Pray without ceasing,” almost as literally as animate nature takes the law of the reflex nervous system, which controls our breathing.
Because Bounds so diligently practiced what he preached, he was able to capture the essence of prayer, and his works live on to call today’s Christians to higher discipleship and an energetic prayer life.
Baker Book House is pleased to present this compilation of Bounds’s exquisite works on prayer.
Book seven in this compilation, Power Through Prayer, was first published in 1907 with the title Preacher and Prayer. All type has been reset, and archaic words have been modernized, but we have been careful not to dim the intense spirit and clear challenges of this godly man who lived to pray and write about prayer.
