S YNOPSIS
The radio announcement of the attack on Pearl Harbor effectively subdued a group of carefree young men gathered for Sunday dinner at their fraternity house in Bloomington, Illinois. For them, it began a long hiatus from campus life and classroom studies. The learning process, however, continued on a much accelerated level with an entirely different curriculum in unusual and often very dangerous surroundings. The wartime lives and times of two of those naive midwesterners, Bill Alderson and Bill Burling, and their metamorphosis from students to combat veterans has, at long last, been assembled (over 50 years hence) to answer the proverbial family question, What did you do in the war, Daddy? .
The letters passing back and forth between these two Bills trace their day-by-day wartime adventures (and occasional misadventures). The fear and uncertainty. The loss of friends and comrades. The longing for stateside family and friends. The hope that the two would see the elephant and live to tell about it.
D EAR B ILL :
A true accounting of the experiences and thoughts of two young midwesterners and their metamorphosis from students to combat Officers during World War II.
In a series of letters, the Bills trace their leap from civilian life to Midshipman and Aviation Cadet and, finally, to deck Officer on a Landing Ship Tank (LST) in the Pacific and bombardier- navigator aboard a B-24 Liberator over Germany.
The letters, to a kindred spirit, bolstered their determination to return home with body, mind and psyche intact. The Bills find humor, cynicism and courage (or the lack of it) in their journey from naive volunteer to the sights and sounds of vicious combat on the sea and in the air.
Two average guys, now much older and a tad wiser, still proud to be Americans and numbered among our combat veterans.

DEAR BILL-
S.A.A.C.C.! To the uninitiated this stands for San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center, Texas. Currently I am on board a train headed for I know not what with a bunch of other guys who know not what. Judging by the appearance and countenance of my fellow travelers the V for Victory symbol is woefully premature. The Third Reich may go on an extra 1,000 years at a full gallop.
The Army, in it s infinite wisdom, has commandeered rolling stock that civilians (in their infinite wisdom) quit riding on at the turn of the century. The prevailing weather conditions locally are the prevailing weather conditions inside. The bleachers at Soldier Field are much more comfortable to the weary rump than the seats on board. Three hours out of the 8th Street Station in Chicago, cigarettes, cigars, arm p
