Description

This fact-packed exposé reveals all the dirty little secrets that Michele Bachmann would rather you didn't know

Since Michele Bachmann became a front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, journalists have been plumbing the depths of the well-regarded blog Dump Bachmann for material on her. Now the bloggers themselves pour forth a decade's worth of research and analysis to show that, no matter what you've heard about Bachmann, there's worse. Much worse. After dogging her heels for the past decade, they reveal the blood-curdling truth about the woman who may well become the Republican Party’s 2012 presidential nominee.

  • Describes Bachmann's faith-based antischool agenda and antigay crusade
  • Explores her fellow travelers, her problematic pastors, and criminal supporters, any of whom could become her Rev. Jeremiah Wright
  • Reveals the boondoggles she's supported, the pernicious legislation she's championed (but, fortunately, almost never passed), and her foreign policy, which boils down to Jesus will be her Secretary of Defense
  • Exposes the truth behind the notorious "Bathroomgate" incident
  • Uncovers the influence of outside money on Bachmann's campaigns, causes, and policies

Democrats disappointed by Obama, Republicans embarrassed by their party's shallow field of candidates, and moderate independents looking for a reasonable choice need to know all they can about presidential contenders. The Madness of Michele Bachman provides deep background they won't find in the mainstream media.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The authors thank the many people who helped to make this book possible: the bloggers and journalists in Minnesota and elsewhere who have reported about Michele Bachmann’s antics; the government workers who make data about candidates and public officials accessible to the public; the many nonprofit organizations that assist in bringing that data to light; our readers for their tips, suggestions, and comments; and those who must remain anonymous (you know who you are).
We also thank Stephen S. Power at John Wiley & Sons for his assistance in distilling a mountain of material from our blogs into book format in record time.
Most of all, the authors thank their long-suffering families and friends who endured more than a decade of listening to us discuss this subject endlessly and suffered through countless Michele Bachmann videos and broadcasts.

INTRODUCTION
Putting the Pieces Together
G etting Michele Bachmann’s story on record has always been Dump Bachmann ’s primary goal. Equally important has been getting it right—and, as often as not, we’ve gotten it first.
Dump Bachmann was the first to get Bachmann’s most hateful and misinformed antigay rhetoric on the record with the posting of her infamous 2004 speech at EdWatch Minnesota, “The Effects of Gay Marriage on Education.” It was Dump Bachmann that first exposed to the world her theocratic campaign speech at the Living Word Church in 2006, in which she talked of being called by God to run for office and preached that women should be “submissive” to their husbands. In both cases, it was Bachmann’s own words that did her in.
That would prove to be the case time and time again during Bachmann’s political career—hoisted with the petard of her own words and record.
Bachmann’s proclivity toward inflammatory and fact-free statements, hypocrisy, and mishandling the truth has drawn frequent comparisons to former half-term Alaskan governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. So naturally, we wondered whether her—and, for some of us, our—hometown of Stillwater, Minnesota, was about to suffer the fate of Sarah Palin’s Wasilla, whose city hall James Carville famously compared to a south Louisiana bait shop.
The national and international press did indeed head straight for Stillwater. Some didn’t even bother to visit Stillwater but smeared it from afar, such as Rolling Stone ’s Matt Taibbi, who called it “a Midwestern version of a Currier & Ives set piece, complete with cozy homes, antique stores—and no black people. In short, the perfect launching pad for a political career built on Bachmann’s retro-Stepford image.”
In defense of my own hometown of Stillwater, I’ve had to inform the media that if they are looking for the typical Bachmann Tea Party voter, they are more likely to find him or her elsewhere in Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District, because Bachmann has failed to carry Stillwater in any of her three congressional races. In fact, not until she moved t
