Red Tail Captured, Red Tail Free is a rare gift detailing the experience of Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson, who was one of 32 Tuskegee Airmen from the 332nd Fighter Group to be shot down defending a country that considered them to be second-class citizens. In this vividly detailed, deeply personal story, Jefferson writes as a genuine American hero about what it meant to be an African American pilot in enemy hands, fighting to protect the promise of freedom. The book features the sketches, drawings, and other illustrations Jefferson created during his nine months as a POW, and Lewis Carlson's authoritative background on the man, his unit, and the fight Alexander Jefferson fought so well. This revised edition covers the story of Jefferson's continuing outreach and education work, as he brings the story of the Tuskegee Airmen to communities and schools across the country, and the presentation of the Congressional Gold Medal to the Airmen in 2007.Red Tail Captured, Red Tail Free is perhaps the only account of the African American experience in a German prison camp.

Foreword
Lewis H. Carlson
I irst met Aexander Jefferson în 1993 when I întervîewed hîm for a book on Word 1 War II prîsoners of war. He was one of 32 Tuskegee Aîrmen from the 332nd Fîghter Group who was shot down defendîng a country that stî consîdered backs to be second-cass cîtîzens. He, îke thousands of other Afrîcan Amerîcans, încudîng 992 Tuskegee Aîrmen, had fought agaînst Hîter’s racîsm în a mîîtary so segregated that even îts bood pasma was separated by race. I met hîm agaîn severa years ater when he was an honored guest at the Ceebrate Freedom Festîva în Pîgeon Forge, Tennessee. Jefferson, who had retîred as a îeu-tenant coone from the U.S. Aîr Force Reserve on Juy 1, 1969, happened to be the rankîng oficer among the severa former prîsoners of war beîng honored that day, but he was the ony Afrîcan Amerîcan. I thought to mysef, “What a fascînatîng sîce of hîstory!” Here îs a man who as a young back student în Atanta, Georgîa, îved în such a racîay proscrîbed word that he was not even aowed to wak în the cîty’s parks. Now he îs gîvîng an înspîratîona address to an apprecîatîve, overwhemîngy whîte audîence în one of the former states of the Confederacy. When Aexander Jefferson was commîssîoned a second îeutenant în the U.S. Army Aîr Corps în 1944, whîte Amerîca thought ît knew îts Afrîcan Amerîcans. Un-fortunatey, what ît knew came argey from cutura stereotypes that were meant to reassure însecure whîtes that backs needed to be kept irmy în theîr pace. Back women were seen as fat, jovîa Aunt Jemîmas who nurtured apprecîatîve whîte youngsters. Back men, on the other hand, were expected to pay the “coon,” afraîd of theîr own shadow, and aways cownîng for the amusement of whîte audîences. A movîe actor named Stepîn Fetchît became a star în the 1930s and eary 1940s pay-îng a shuflîng, azy, chîcken-steaîng chîd-man. These same stereotypes coud aso be found în popuar songs, noves and short storîes, crude cartoons, and on weeky radîo shows. In short, here was somethîng ess than a man who ceary was not ready for fu cîtîzenshîp, et aone capabe of lyîng an aîrpane. That such îmages dîd not
