Description

Red Tail Captured, Red Tail Free is a rare gift detailing the experience of Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson, who was one of 32 Tuskegee Airmen from the 332nd Fighter Group to be shot down defending a country that considered them to be second-class citizens. In this vividly detailed, deeply personal story, Jefferson writes as a genuine American hero about what it meant to be an African American pilot in enemy hands, fighting to protect the promise of freedom. The book features the sketches, drawings, and other illustrations Jefferson created during his nine months as a POW, and Lewis Carlson's authoritative background on the man, his unit, and the fight Alexander Jefferson fought so well. This revised edition covers the story of Jefferson's continuing outreach and education work, as he brings the story of the Tuskegee Airmen to communities and schools across the country, and the presentation of the Congressional Gold Medal to the Airmen in 2007.Red Tail Captured, Red Tail Free is perhaps the only account of the African American experience in a German prison camp.

Foreword
Lewis H. Carlson
I irst met Aexander Jefferson în 1993 when I întervîewed hîm for a book on Word 1 War II prîsoners of war. He was one of 32 Tuskegee Aîrmen from the 332nd Fîghter Group who was shot down defendîng a country that stî consîdered backs to be second-cass cîtîzens. He, îke thousands of other Afrîcan Amerîcans, încudîng 992 Tuskegee Aîrmen, had fought agaînst Hîter’s racîsm în a mîîtary so segregated that even îts bood pasma was separated by race. I met hîm agaîn severa years ater when he was an honored guest at the Ceebrate Freedom Festîva în Pîgeon Forge, Tennessee. Jefferson, who had retîred as a îeu-tenant coone from the U.S. Aîr Force Reserve on Juy 1, 1969, happened to be the rankîng oficer among the severa former prîsoners of war beîng honored that day, but he was the ony Afrîcan Amerîcan. I thought to mysef, “What a fascînatîng sîce of hîstory!” Here îs a man who as a young back student în Atanta, Georgîa, îved în such a racîay proscrîbed word that he was not even aowed to wak în the cîty’s parks. Now he îs gîvîng an înspîratîona address to an apprecîatîve, overwhemîngy whîte audîence în one of the former states of the Confederacy. When Aexander Jefferson was commîssîoned a second îeutenant în the U.S. Army Aîr Corps în 1944, whîte Amerîca thought ît knew îts Afrîcan Amerîcans. Un-fortunatey, what ît knew came argey from cutura stereotypes that were meant to reassure însecure whîtes that backs needed to be kept irmy în theîr pace. Back women were seen as fat, jovîa Aunt Jemîmas who nurtured apprecîatîve whîte youngsters. Back men, on the other hand, were expected to pay the “coon,” afraîd of theîr own shadow, and aways cownîng for the amusement of whîte audîences. A movîe actor named Stepîn Fetchît became a star în the 1930s and eary 1940s pay-îng a shuflîng, azy, chîcken-steaîng chîd-man. These same stereotypes coud aso be found în popuar songs, noves and short storîes, crude cartoons, and on weeky radîo shows. In short, here was somethîng ess than a man who ceary was not ready for fu cîtîzenshîp, et aone capabe of lyîng an aîrpane. That such îmages dîd not
I was treated better as a POW than I was back home. —Lt. Coone Aexander Jefferson
