P RAISE FOR
Faith Begins at Home
Christian parents have a complex and stressful responsibility to pass faith on to their children. Mark Holmen gives families a language and the needed practical tools to communicate faith in Jesus to our children.
Rev. T. J. Anderson
Vice President, National Youth Events
Recent surveys of the evangelical Christian community by The Barna Group and Newsweek / Beliefnet indicate that our conservative, traditional theological views of the faith could be in jeopardy. I agree with Mark Holmen that it is critically important to teach our children a biblical worldview. The message in Mark’s book stresses the importance of beginning this process in the home. My prayer as you read this book is that you and your children will be strengthened in your walk of faith.
Bob Creson
President, Wycliffe Bible Translators USA
Pastor Holmen connects personal story, family practice of faith and biblical plan and direction to the home. He challenges senior pastors and congregations to move into partnership with the home as the primary place to nurture faith! Parents and other adult caregivers will also find the practical applications in each chapter of this book to be a great tool for use with their families.
Dr. Dick Hardel
Author, FaithTalk™ with Children and Blest Be the Pie That Binds Director, Vision and Creative Ministries The Youth and Family Institute Bloomington, Minnesota
Mark Holmen is passionate about the family and wants every home to do family God’s way—not the world’s way. His years of experience first as a youth and family minister and now as a senior pastor of a strong and rapidly growing congregation have given him incredible insights on the subject. Faith Begins at Home is packed full of good biblical teaching, family activities and small-group discussion ideas to help you in building strong families. I strongly recommend this book.
Dr. Bill Hossler
President, Missionary Church Inc.
With an alarming number of children leaving the Christian faith in their college and young adult years, it’s time to reevaluate how we do church. It’s time for the church to begin equipping parents—especially fathers—to bring up their children in the training and instruction of the Lord. Mark Holmen’s book is a practical, balanced and fresh approach to family ministry that every church leader and Christian parent will want to read.
Rusty Russell
Director, Family Ministries Southeast Christian Church, Louisville, Kentucky Coauthor, When God Builds a Church
Brimming with biblically based common sense, Mark Holmen offers the modern family a model and practical steps on growing faith at home. I especially appreciated his strategy of a church-home partnership.
Tim Smith
Author and Speaker President, Life Skills for American Families

Foreword
Mark Holmen is not the first person to write a book, even a Christian-oriented book, about family development and childrearing. Today when I “Googled” these terms, it appeared that there are well over 150,000 such books in print! Do we need to sacrifice one more forest for another such book?
In this case, I would enthusiastically answer yes! First of all, I have known Mark for years and have come to trust him as a man of God, a pastor, a Bible teacher and a friend. If he says he has something important to say about his area of expertise and passion, it is in my own best interests to pay attention. Second, I have witnessed his work with children and families and know that he is serious, competent and gifted in this arena. His years of experience and his passion for helping families, exhibited in ministry settings throughout the country, merit our consideration when he addresses this issue.
Consequently, it was with great anticipation that I read his manuscript on ministry to family. You see, Mark’s family ministry was one of the models I studied most closely some years ago when I was conducting research about what makes a church’s ministry to family most effective. During the writing of Transforming Children Into Spiritual Champions , I spent many months traveling the country, seeking to identify ministries anywhere in the nation that were effectively seeing children become all that God meant for them to be, and facilitating effective parenting as the key to that process. Mark’s ministry was one of the most effective I found anywhere in the U.S. I learned a lot from him then, and I’m still learning from him today. This book is his most recent educational tool.
As you read these pages, you will encounter important parenting, family development and faith-building concepts. Each of those areas serves as a personal challenge to us: Have I really established my family as a top priority in my life? Can my kids understand and live a more faithful life by watching what I do? Have I truly devoted the necessary resources to making my family life as good as God wants it to be? Is my faith discernible by my lifestyle, not just through my passionate words regarding family life? What older adults, whose experience is priceless, am I learning from while I’m on this journey? What are my expectations of the local church in relationship to my efforts as a parent? These and other helpful questions emerge from the text as Mark pushes us to consider everything about our family life.
Theory is helpful, but the delivery of viable, practical suggestions is where the rubber meets the road for most parents. This book is full of rubber! It contains a dynamic blend of biblical insight, personal experience, research revelations and doable applications for those who love Christ and want their home to reflect His presence and His principles.
Once again, Mark Holmen has helped me—this time in my most important role, that of parent. Let his years of experience help you, too. Our God and your family will be blessed by it.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
This book is dedicated to the memory of my father, Arlen “Uncle Arlie” Holmen, who died on November 23, 2004. My dad was my mentor, role model, friend and hero who, together with my mom, Myrne, showed me how to “do family right.”
I also want to thank my wonderful wife, Maria, and my daughter, Malyn, both of whom share my passion for families. While their names may not appear on the cover, their fingerprints are throughout this book. They are my primary source of inspiration, support and understanding. Thank you both for your unconditional love and willingness to be transparent with our lives. I love you both .
Introduction
The Functional Dysfunctional Family
On October 31, 1995, at 12:13 A.M ., my life changed forever. My wife, Maria, and I found ourselves in a birthing room at North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis. We’d been married for five years, but we now stood at the brink of becoming parents for the first time. For three hours I steadfastly stood by Maria’s side, serving as her focal point as she went through contraction after contraction.
Then the incredible moment of truth arrived! Our daughter, Malyn, came into the world. What an amazing sight to see! Immediately, the nurses whisked her away to the other side of the room to clean and measure her.
Malyn was crying loudly, but Maria was also groaning from the pain of delivering her first child. To this day I remember standing halfway between them wondering, Which way do I go? Do I go to the side of my wife, who has just gone through one of the most exhausting and painful experiences of her life? Or do I go to the side of my precious little girl who is crying for the first time?
Then the voice of God spoke to me—which, oddly, sounded a lot like Maria’s voice—and commanded, “Go make sure Malyn is okay.” My daughter had been in the world for just 60 seconds, and as a parent, I already needed help!
The Search for Success
Many parents today are searching for help. They want to succeed! They surf the Internet, watch Oprah and Dr. Phil, and buy every self-help book that comes out, all in an effort to keep their families together for another day. Yet families seem to be hanging on by a thread. In our desperate search for answers, I wonder if we realize that God is there for us. He desires that our families not just survive,
