Description

God has given women a gift that is so woven into their nature that they approach everything, from homes to husbands, with the thought, "Wow, I could do great things with that!" To see potential is a great good, but the downside is the propensity to compare reality with the expectation. This is especially harmful in marriage if a woman tries to show her husband his potential in all the wrong ways, such as comparison or suggestions for change. So, how does a wife encourage her husband to become what God has placed within him to be? It requires an understanding of her own need for repentance and restoration, as well as working with the right team and the right tools. The right team is God as architect, Jesus as supplier, and the Holy Spirit as builder. The right tools include prayer, declaration, and action that bring restoration and that also reveal her own need to change. Each chapter explores a case study of a biblical character's life, an action that gained him authority, an area of vulnerability, and the most memorable moment this person wore the mantle. Each chapter also includes a pattern for prayer: questions from which a woman can build the blueprint for repentance, restoration, and declaration. Personal application includes Putting Your Words to Work, a written vision declaration, and a Seal it with a Gift with practical ways to gently, yet generously, introduce revelation of a husband's skills and abilities through a tangible gift.

F OREWORD
Did you marry the perfect man on your wedding day only to discover there were quite a few things you would like to see changed after you had lived with him awhile?
Amie Hayes Dockery, in her book Designing Your Dream Husband , has given us a good view of the folly of such a notion. Many of the flaws we see in our husbands are prick points from the Lord that are meant to shape us up.
One story in my own life comes to mind. One of our friends married a lady that we knew well but with whom we had never had such close contact as when we were pastoring a small church in the Midwest. There was just something about this person that grated on me. One day, as I was praying about the situation and saying, Lord, you need to change Peggy. * Why don’t you make her a more congenial individual? She would be so much easier to be with if she was not so arrogant and snooty and was a bit more down to earth , a whisper came to my heart—and I knew it was the Lord. He said, “Maybe it’s not her I want to change.” From that time on, I had to check my attitude regarding Peggy and look inside myself to see what I needed to change so that our relationship could be as it should be.
Here is one of the principles in Amie’s book that caught my attention: “The power in prayer doesn’t come from praying your problems; it only comes in praying the answers.” This statement makes me pray what I want to see happen with my husband, not the things I wish he would change.
Some time ago, I wrote down all of the positive qualities I could think of about my husband, Jack. Periodically, I still look at that list and feel very fortunate and blessed that I have a husband who tells me often that he loves me, who is not a moody person at all, who is a good father to our children, and more. I would suggest that every wife do the same thing. It is good for the soul and also good for your marriage relationship.
Amie will give you suggestions, including suggested gifts that you may buy, to solidify your growth in the area you have just read about in each chapter. Her suggestions are so helpful in making the principles she teaches yours.
Designing Your Dream Husband is a good textbook to follow in every aspect of your marriage relationship. Amie writes about the things we really don’t like to face, such as submission, communication, dedication and other weighty subjects that need to be practiced to cultivate a successful marriage. If you practice her suggestions, you will be amply rewarded for your effort. A happy marriage is certainly worth every effort we make.
Jack and I will celebrate our fiftieth wedding anniversary this year. Although we have had our disagreements, we have worked together to bring about a very happy union. It probably would have happened more easily if we had had a textbook like this to follow.

A CKNOWLEDGMENTS
From the bottom of my heart, I wish to thank my mother, who was at least a full-time consultant on this book, and on some days looked more like a ghostwriter. Thank you so much for the all-nighters. I’m sorry they didn’t end in my adolescence.
I would love to thank two wonderful women, Jackie Shepherd and Johanna Neesom, for their contribution to this project. Your dedication goes so far beyond human expectation and ability to calculate. I pray that God will grant you both the single thing you most desire.
To Judy Pogue, thank you for your candor and transparency. I want you to know that any time you talk, women young and old listen. And I must say thank you to Paul, your generous husband! If he weren’t the walking, talking, modern version of Joseph, I wouldn’t have believed so easily or prayed so fervently! I love you both and am so grateful that God brought you into my and my husband’s lives.
Thank you to all the women in my life—Grandmother, aunts, cousins, friends and pastors’ wives. Without your impartation, I would be completely unqualified and underdeveloped. You all make me credible. I love you!
CHAPTER 1
T HE A RT OF D ESIGN
Use wisdom and understanding to establish your home; let good sense fill the rooms with priceless treasures.
P ROVERBS 24:3
God has given women a unique gift of vision. This gift is so woven into a woman’s nature that she often views life—from home to husband—with the thought, Wow, I could do great things with that! To see potential is a wonderful gift; but many times we, as women, do not know how to get from where we are to where we want to be. We want to see change, and we want to see it now! I keenly understand the discouragement of comparing reality with expectation.
During the early years of my marriage, I went about showing my husband, Stacey, his potential—in all the wrong ways. I made all the common mistakes, such as comparing him with other great men of God and making sly suggestions. Although my wholehearted intention was to build up my husband, I was actually tearing him down.
One day, I met a woman with a very successful husband whose personality was quite similar to my husband’s. As she and I discussed her past, I asked her to describe how she had encouraged her husband to greatness. She simply said, “Years ago the Lord told me that I must be careful how I treat my husband, because he is a Joseph.” I knew that her husband’s name wasn’t Joseph, so I asked her to explain what she meant. She told me that God had given her a picture of her husband’s calling and anointing as similar to the character that Joseph displayed, recorded in the book of Genesis. Seeing her husband the way God saw him literally gave her a pattern to pray for him and gave her an expectancy about the fulfillment of his calling.
After that conversation, I realized that the real work in my marriage was going to take place in me. For the first time, I understood the influence that my view of my husband had upon my actions, primarily because I knew that I had not a
