DEDICATION
To the men who may someday come calling, asking to marry Amy and Kate Lepine. You would do well to read this before you call. To Jimmy, John and David Lepine. May you, as husbands, succeed where I have failed. To Mary Ann. You have affirmed, accepted, encouraged and loved me well. You know best that I am still learning how to implement what I’ve written in this book. Maybe after I read it a few more times, I’ll begin to get it right .

FOREWORD
In the fall of 1992, an experienced broadcaster made a huge decision of faith—a heroic decision to move his family from San Antonio to Little Rock to become the cohost of a daily radio program for families.
This radio program had no name, no stations lined up to air its broadcasts, and its host—me—had virtually no experience on radio. Talk about faith! Let me introduce you to that courageous man, the author of The Christian Husband , Bob Lepine.
Because of Bob’s leadership, FamilyLife Today was born. Now many years later, our radio program is heard in more than 500 communities by more than 1.5 million folks every week.
You really get to know someone when you go through something so challenging and demanding as birthing a “radio baby.” Like any growing infant, this daily program required feeding, rocking and, yes, countless diaper changes! Bob stood by the cradle through it all, and I’ve learned much about him as a man as we’ve sat together behind the microphone for thousands of broadcasts.
Over the years, I’ve laughed with him as he’s done his Elvis shtick. I’ve sat around a bonfire, singing songs from the ’60s. I’ll bet you can’t name one that he doesn’t know the words to.
Bob and I also have been through a couple of deep and dark valleys together; how a man perseveres under fire tells you a lot about him, and I can tell you that Bob is a good man—a very good man. I learned much by watching Bob keep his wife, Mary Ann, a priority as he managed his growing brood of five children.
In these pages, Bob peels back his heart and honestly shares the insecurities that every man feels as he takes on the mantle of loving and leading his wife. You’ll be able to relate as Bob shares some of his failures and the lessons learned.
Make no mistake—this book is not a fluffy, Bible-lite approach; you’re about to receive the biblical job description for becoming a husband. God speaks often and powerfully through His Word in this book, and at the end you won’t be left scratching your head about just what God requires of a man who seeks to love and lead his wife.
If you’ve ever wondered as a man what it means, practically, to love your wife, then you’ve found some answers in this book.
If you’ve been puzzled by how you can practically be the spiritual leader of your wife, look no further. The box top to solve that puzzle is in your hands.
It’s time. Strap yourself into your favorite chair and get ready to have your concept of what it means to be a husband challenged and stretched. Like me, you’re going to grow to like Bob Lepine and appreciate his ministry in your life.
Yours for a Family Reformation—One Home at a Time, Dennis Rainey
If I wanted to find out whether a man was a Christian, I wouldn’t ask his minister. I would go and ask his wife. If a man doesn’t treat his wife right, I don’t want to hear him talk about Christianity. What is the use of his talking about salvation for the next life if he has no salvation for this?
D. L. M OODY
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
In July of 1992, I sat across from Dennis Rainey at a conference room table. We were meeting to discuss the possibility of my coming to FamilyLife to help launch a new daily radio program. After more than 15 years of ministry to families, Dennis was looking for someone who shared his passion for marriage and family.
“Does ‘family’ make you weep?” he asked. “Does it make you pound the table?”
Did I have a passion for families?
I knew what the answer to that question was supposed to be if I wanted the job! I had a passion for my family. But did I have the kind of passion that would be necessary to sustain a daily radio program where we talked about marriage and family issues every day?
The flicker of passion I had on the subject at that meeting has been fanned into a flame in the years since I joined FamilyLife. I have come to see how integral the institution of the family is to everything God has ordained. Before there was a church, before there was a government, before anything else, there was a family. I have come to see that healthy marriages and families are at the top of God’s priority list.
My own passion on the subject has been fueled in large measure by Dennis’s unwavering passion. In recording more than 1,500 radio programs, I have been mentored, challenged, coached and shaped by his steadfast convictions and his commitment to God’s Word. I’m sure that as he read the manuscript for this book, he found himself nodding, as many of his own thoughts are here expressed in my words. It has been a privilege to be both his coworker and his friend over the years.
Special thanks are also due to the team at FamilyLife that holds our radio program together. These are the people who have picked up the slack for me while I’ve worked on this book: Eric Platner, Keith Lynch, Phil Krause, Mark Ramsey and Andy Watson shape each of our daily broadcasts, with able help from Sheryl Colcough. Mike Clowers returned phone calls to radio stations on my behalf. Tonda Nations assisted in research for this book in the same way she helps prepare us for each radio program. And, as always, Christy Bain keeps the details of my life and my work in order. You guys are a great team. I appreciate you. Now, get back to work.
Thanks, too, to Dave Boehi and Mark Whitlock. Dave is an editor par excellence , and his feedback on this manuscript has made it a better book. Mark’s advice is always well reasoned and wise beyond its years.
Thanks to the team at Servant for embodying their company name. Special thanks to Bert Ghezzi, who believed in this project from the beginning
