About the Author
Medicine is, and always should be, considered a vast field of service, constantly pioneering to improve the well-being of us all. From the beginning of my education in health and nutrition, I have known many healers whose efforts and service to humanity could be described as nothing less than heroic. It is with these heroes (and that perspective) in mind that I offer this book to any and all who read it. This book is for all those who have fought ignorance and prejudice, for those who have paid the price to keep this information alive and available for the rest of us. Among a whole host of others, these include Dr. John Christopher, Dr. Richard Schultz, Dr. David Williams, Dr. Jonathan Wright, and my wife, Kristen.
Preface
I t has been almost ten years since I wrote the first draft of Lessons from the Miracle Doctors . That’s a lot of time in the world of health and nutrition, and although I have periodically updated it in subsequent printings, I have never really done a full rewrite—until now. This is the first major update since I published that first edition in 1999, and it contains a significant amount of new material.
Why is a rewrite needed? The amazing thing is that virtually nothing involved with the core of the program is in need of updating or correction. A decade has passed, and yet the basic principles are as valid now as when I first wrote them. Actually, it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise when you consider that the principles mirror concepts used by some of the greatest alternative healers of the last fifty years. The step-by-step instructions or methodologies involved in the program have also remained largely unchanged over the last ten years. So, if the core principles and methodologies of the Baseline of Health Program haven’t changed, what’s the need for a new edition?
The answer is that although the core of the Baseline of Health hasn’t changed, there has indeed been tremendous change in the environment surrounding the program:
• The availability of “new” ingredients and “new understandings” of some old favorite ingredients.
• New areas of interest. We receive over 10,000 e-mails a month at the Baseline of Health Foundation. Every day, people from all over the world let us know the “hot” or “new” major health issues they want to know more about, everything including anti-aging, bird flu, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and extreme drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB).
• Also, as evidenced by the questions coming in, there is a profound need to expand on some specific health issues, such as cholesterol and diabetes, that were only touched on in the previous editions.
• Finally, the world of medicine is catching up (well, maybe just a little) with the Baseline of Health Program. Many “new” areas of exploration in medicine (such as using the immune system to combat cancer) now echo the principles and techniques of the Baseline of Health detailed over a decade ago, and that’s certainly worth exploring.
Now, keep in mind that the effective response to all of these new issues still lies in the same core principles and methodologies of the Baseline of Health Program. But it is useful and reassuring to know in detail why the program works, not only for old threats such as cancer but equally well for new ones such as bird flu and the exploding diabetes epidemic. The old saying, “The more things change, the more they stay the same” applies to the Baseline of Health over the last ten years. There have indeed been many changes and much new information to deal with in revising Lessons from the Miracle Doctors , but, again, when it comes to the core principles and step-by-step techniques of the book, they are unchanged. If anything, much of their validity has been confirmed by medical research (within limits).
In the pages that follow, I have tried to illuminate for you the barriers to obtaining good health, and I have presented practical, proven step-by-step methods for breaking down those barriers and seizing (for yourself and your family) health, energy, and mental and spiritual well-being. A lot of what you will learn here will fly in the face of so-called “conventional wisdom,” but just because something is commonly accepted does not necessarily make it true. Our modern society has invested trillions of dollars in the ideas, equipment, research, facilities, and promises of our present health-care system, and it is almost unbearable to consider that much of it may be a waste. It will take great courage to accept responsibility for your own health, but I believe you, and millions like you, can and will do just that.
It has often been said that this is the only body you will ever get, and it must last a lifetime. The only question is how long and healthy that lifetime will be. The simple fact is that you absolutely can live well into your seventies, eighties, and beyond, in great health and with great vitality—but you need to make the right decisions now for that to happen. If you want to live a full and satisfying life, then you must take back control of your own health today. And the Baseline of Health Program can show you how to do just that.
Introduction
T hirty years ago, diseases such as colon cancer, diabetes, prostate cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, and diverticular disease were virtually unknown. Today, they are almost a certainty if you live long enough. This fact alone should be enough for any rational person to question the state of health care in the world today, but when you also consider how much we pay for this privilege, the doubt looms even larger. Every year we dump more money into pharmaceutical drugs, doctors, hospitals, ever more expensive medical devices, and insurance, but with what result? We certainly aren’t getting any healthier.
WHAT WE PAY FOR HEALTH CARE
In 1960, total health expenditures in the United States amounted to $27 billion; in 2003, the figure stood at nearly $1.7 trillion (a 63-fold rise) and is projected to reach an almost unimaginable $3.5 trillion by 2014. In contrast, the U.S. population grew by only 51 percent. During that same period, health expenditures per person rose from $143 to $5,670 (a 40-fold rise), while general inflation, as a point of reference, showed only a fivefold increase. 1 The bottom line is that, according to the World Health Organization, the U.S. spends more on health care than any other country in the world—more than twice as much per person as Britain and Japan and nearly 30 percent more than second-ranking Monaco. And the amount has risen steadily. Annual medical spending in the U.S. stood at more than $6,000 per person in 2005. 2 And while the Unite
