Foreword
L et me start by saying this: Namrata is not a lazy girl. In the short time I ve known her, she s asked me to go horse riding with her, which I have. Go bicycling with her, which I am yet to do. She s also whipped my ass in her Pilates class and left me groaning, Who knew lying down could be this exhausting? In the last four months she s gone diving in the Andamans, been skydiving in Dubai, has been learning contemporary dance, and gone diving again in the Andamans. Here s what I ve come to realize about this gorgeous little bohemian. Namrata is a reminder of how you want to live-reminiscent of how we all were in those bubbly teenage years when we didn t stress the small things. Only, Namrata is not a teenager any more, she just knows what s important in life and the fun bits that we should never let go of. She has all the purity and spunk of a girl who spends her time doing exactly what makes her happy: staying active and enjoying all the small joys of life.
But what stands out to me the most is the dedication and discipline it takes to live this ideal lifestyle, indulging in all the activities that take you into nature, ensuring a perfect sync between mind and body. For example, no drinking, waking up early and, not to mention, getting off one s lazy bum. All of these activities are not her way of keeping fit, necessarily. It s actually her way of having fun. Fitness is just a by-product of that.
I m glad she started training to be a Pilates teacher so young because now it s more than just a job. Her expertise comes from intuition, from really knowing her craft for so long. Her teaching techniques are simple, intense, yet fun. Every class, I see myself doing something different and pushing myself harder. I always want to go back for more. Pursuant to a workout, I never feel dull or exhausted, instead I feel more energized and positive. Always a good day after the workout!
I constantly weigh my performance in class against hers . . .
Me: Nams, is your core always engaged throughout the day?
Nams: Yes.
Me: Even when we re riding horses?
Nams: Yes, especially when we are riding horses.
So everything she does is an opportunity to engage her core? Exactly!
I discovered The Pilates Studio after running a number of marathons, which left me satisfied, but my body had taken a beating. There was a lot that needed to be fixed. Now, instead of going to the chiropractor, I go to Namrata. Pilates aligns everything, it puts your spine, hips, etc., back in the right place, and every time I walk out, I feel a sense of connection to my core through all the breathing and engaging that we ve spent the last hour doing. By the way, the breathing bit also feels quite meditative. It brings me right into my core, into myself. Pilates makes you aware of all your big muscles, and even the little ones you never knew existed, through simple stabilizing exercises. The first time I did Pilates, I felt silly for expending so much energy on huge strenuous repetitions at the gym, when all that was needed was the slightest focus turned inward on much more subtle movement. This reminds me of Namrata-a beautiful, little girl with huge po
