Description

Is good fortune just a matter of luck? Or being born under the right star? In this compelling book, Murdo MacLeod shows how you can load the dice in your own favour. Murdo MacLeod's easy-to-follow programme demonstrates how to harness the power within you in order to achieve:material wealthperfect healthpersonal charmthe conquest of anxietyFirst published in 1932, How to Achieve Good Fortune is strikingly modern in its approach, not just in its promotion of the 'power of positive thinking', but also in the method of picturing what it is that you desire. Many of the ideas that Murdo MacLeod proposed have since been taken up in New Age philosophy, particularly the concept of 'Cosmic Mind'.

Introduction

As I sat at the kitchen table in my aunt’s house in Tolsta, on the far-flung Island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, I was shown a photocopy of a book titled My Good Fortune, written by my great-great-uncle Murdo MacLeod. I glanced at the copy: it was published in 1932 in New York.
I was in the Hebrides to research my family history, having always felt a close affinity with the Gaels of my maternal family. I have a strange sense of longing for - and belonging to - the Gaelic culture, for its music and language, for its wild peat-pocked moors, the flower meadows of the machair, the marram grass that stings your legs as you walk through the sand dunes on the way to the beautiful wild sea shore. I wanted to know about this incredibly strong family that gave birth to me.
After trawling through countless crofting records, I was able to piece together the family as it expanded from its far-distant relative, Angus Smith. Angus was born about 1750 and came from Uig on the west coast of Lewis. He settled in the township of Tolsta and it was there that the growing family faced the trials and hardships of growing up in such a wild place. My mother was Mary Smith, daughter of Alasdair and Annabel Smith of 7, New Tolsta.
Murdo MacLeod was born in 1880 to Kenneth MacLeod and his wife Mary MacDonald at 56, Tolsta. He had two sisters and five brothers; one of his sisters was my great-grandmother, Iseabal. Three of his brothers - Kenneth, Alexander and Angus - were all killed in the First World War.
Murdo married Agnes Fleck from Kirkintilloch in 1902 and emigrated to Canada in 1908: over the centuries many Scots have moved or been moved overseas to start a new life.

Clearly a very intelligent man, Murdo gained several university degrees in America, was a chaplain in the US Army, and a minister in the Presbyterian Church. In 1929 he undertook a trip to the UK with ‘The world alliance for the promotion of international friendships’, visiting several churches in Scotland. He was minister and supply pastor at various churches around New York State and was clearly developing some fairly controversial ideas for that time. He advocated individual human engineering, spiritual therapeutics and counselling. He called his work ‘The Tree of Life Programme’ and this meant co-operation between the medical profession and the Christian ministry; we would call this an holistic approach today.
He may have been ahead of his time, but this approach to solving personal problems is still relevant today. With difficulty I read the photocopy of photocopied pages, clumsily turning the A4 script hung together with a staple. Upon re-reading it, I realised I wanted it in the convenience of an ebook and to republish my great-great-uncle’s inspirational book for today’s readers.

Good Fortune
Vast abundance, plenitude of power and good fortune of whatever nature, are within your reach and belong to him who claims them.
To secure golden good fortune requires mental effort yet effort within the power of all. “If a man look sharply and attentively, he shall see fortune.”
It is an axiom of psychology that if you change your mind you will also change your circumstances. “Men are not animals erect,” says Bacon, “but immortal gods.” A positive mind achieves positive results.
If there is no positive desire for some form of good fortune, negative elements will clutter life with noxious weeds which become poverty, disease and unhappiness.
Enthusiasm - “whirlwinds of tempestuous fire” - favours fortune’s realisation. “Nothing great,” says Emerson, “was ever achieved without enthusiasm.”
The positive mind will climb upward unto crowns.

Psychic Power
Life, to most people, is a hit and miss existence, a futile fight against devastating forces, a game of chance with the dice loaded. Fate would seem to have the upper hand.
But a victorious life is within the reach of all, self-directed and radiant; for man’s psychic powers, directly affecting the whole of life vitally are simply enormous within certain wide limits.
There are three psychic facts of far-reaching consequences.
First, in your own mind are the creative causes of good fortune or misfortune, of victory or futility. You may therefore load the dice, so to speak, in favour of your own good fortune. Fate is within you and under your own control.
Second, it is a fact of your mind that what you mentally dwell on is what you become and what will be yours in good fortune or otherwise.
Third, it is an unchanging law of your mind that ideas entertained, low or lofty, must realise themselves, that is, must become varied emotions, must effect changes in your body, must actualise themselves according to their nature in material substance such as money and friends.
Ideas and ideals, positive and of constructive power, are conducive to good fortune if you affirm them with quiet sincerity, browse among them and entertain them as actual friends or things having living existence. They shall bring into full expression what you desire to be and the things you desire to have.
In this way, you may bring about in yourself a healthy, harmonious life, rich and beautiful, and a personality ever expanding in magnetism and magnificence; also increasing prosperity together with the happiness and satisfactions possible to you here and now on this plane.
Trust absolutely in the law of psychic power, affirming the results desired, and you will advance steadily to life’s high levels and satisfying rewards.
“’Tis god-like to have power.”

Creative Ambition
Ambition - radiant ambition! Eager desire to achieve success - that is the golden key to the treasure trove.
Strong desire for an excellent prize - for good health, good fortune, or eminence - will waken your hidden powers and bring you to your goal.
Marvellous powers lie latent in you and in every normal person. They await the phosphorescent fire of your ambition to make them burst into living flame. Radiant ambition arouses latent powers to creative action.
Aspiration - incandescent aspiration! Eager desire to excel - that is the golden key to hidden treasures.
Strong desire for the prize of personal excellence - for nobility and skill, for magnetism and golden prosperity - will drive you steadily to your goal.
Matchless latent forces await your aspiration. They await the radiant flame of your affirmation to break forth into creative fire. Incandescent aspiration drives your aroused forces to effective action.
The ambition to excel in personality and performance necessarily precedes the possession of a worthy prize. The prize awaits ambition. Desire may spring from any plane - physical, mental, spiritual, social, financial.
Nature abhors a vacuum. You will get what you truly desire, believe you can get, and have the capacity to receive. Desire may be for an acre or for a continent. Lazarus desired crumbs and received just crumbs. If you dip a thimble in the ocean of supply, you will get a thimbleful. If you dip a bucket, you will get a bucketful. According to your ambition and capacity to receive it shall be done unto you.
Enlarge your desire and your capacity to receive, and the enlarged capacity will be filled with the produce of enlarged desire.
The earnest, sincere, and wholehearted practice, increasingly a daily delight, of the affirmations of this little book will not only lead you to material good fortune, but also to glad self-unfoldment and steady growth in beauty and power - the ultimates of life and the world.
Superlative qualities of mind produce superlative results. Ambition or strong desire is the mother of attainment. The golden key is in your hand. This is the golden note in the golden sun.
In a nutshell: first, set your goals and accomplishments to be realised. These are life-purposes with lesser goals in life-processes. You cannot merely drift, like a chip of wood or derelict ship on a wind-swept sea, to great accomplishments. Second, re-orientate and re-educated the subconscious mind for the realisation of you
