Inroduction
We can do hard things. We can overcome challenging circumstances. We can surmount our fears. I learned this after I was involved in a car crash when I was twenty-two. It was a hit-and-run, to be exact. Someone in a yellow sportscar slammed into the back of my vehicle, then disappeared into the night. Round and round, my car spun three times on the seven-lane expressway. You hear the common saying, “My life flashed before my eyes.” Well, I experienced this firsthand. The positive memories and heartfelt milestones in my life came to mind in just a few seconds, like an old movie reel. That night, I realized how powerful the human brain is. While these rushing recollections flickered through my thoughts, I was ferociously turning my steering wheel. I had no idea if I was going to collide into oncom-ing cars or if I was spiraling toward other vehicles in front of me. I thought, So this is how my life ends. But seconds in, somehow, my car stopped spin-ning. The smoke cleared. And I ended up with my car facing the forward-moving direction. I spotted the yellow sportscar speeding off. The driver entered the nearest exit and fled the scene. No cars were coming, but I needed to get out of the way. So, with haste, I collected myself, watchfully drove off onto the side of the highway, then called for help. The back of my car was demolished. Luckily, I wasn’t severely harmed, but I had to visit my neurologist, and then receive chiropractic treatments multiple times a week for two years. After the weekend of the crash, I had to head back to campus for gradu-ate classes. My mother brought a rental car to the house, so I could use it to return to school. With my mom by my side, I loaded the trunk, then approached the driver side door. I froze. It was as if I’d seen a snake
