Being happy depends on becoming a complete person— spirituality is the path that leads you to wholeness.
“To become complete human beings, to find happiness, we need to develop our human spirits to the fullest. This is what it means to be spiritual: to be the best we can be; to exercise all the qualities and traits that are unique to humankind and that give us the identity as human beings. This spirituality is an integral component of being human, and we cannot have true and enduring happiness without it.”
For many of us, the journey toward personal and spiritual fulfillment is fraught with unexplained feelings of emptiness in the struggle to reach what seems an elusive and murky goal. It doesn’t have to be this way.
Using simple, accessible language and clear examples, this wellspring of wisdom shows you that true happiness is attainable once you stop looking outside yourself for the source and realize that it can be found within you. You will identify the unique abilities that comprise your human spirit—such as gratitude, humility, compassion, and generosity—and explore how to use them in ways that will not only remove your feelings of incompleteness, but also allow you to experience happiness in an invigorating and spiritually refreshing way.
Based on ancient wisdom and modern psychology, the thoughtful, heartfelt anecdotes and inspiring, easy-to-follow exercises will carry you beyond your present state of discontent and open for you an entirely new path toward becoming the best you you can possibly be.

Introduction
H ave you ever heard anyone say, More happiness? Thanks anyway, but I just don t need any more. I m as happy as I can be ? We might hear expressions such as I ve never been so happy or I couldn t be happier, but I doubt anyone would turn down more happiness. I dare say none of us has as much happiness as we would like.
Have you ever felt that you just can t quite put your finger on the reason why you re not happier? Although there are certainly some who experience severe mood disorders, such as clinical depression, that can be diagnosed and treated, more often people are bothered by a vague feeling of discontent, a persistent feeling that something s missing.
Some people think that if only they had everything they wanted, they would be content. Others, however, do not lack anything in particular but are still discontent. It is possible that they are lacking something of which they are unaware. They may indeed have all the desires they can hear, see, touch, smell, and taste, but there is something that is not accessible to the five senses yet is an integral part of a human being, without which a person is not whole: spirituality.
The human spirit requires essential nutrients. To the extent that we supply these nutrients, we are happy. To the extent that we are deprived of these nutrients, we suffer from what I call Spiritual Deficiency Syndrome (SDS).
Within the pages of Happiness and the Human Spirit , I will explore not only what these essential nutrients are, but also how they hold the key to happiness. In essence, my point is that, to be truly happy, we need to live as spiritual beings.
I m not talking about being religious. Although I draw on my background as a psychiatrist and a rabbi, as well as the tradition of Jewish wisdom, what I offer is for people of all faith traditions. I propose that every person can be spiritual, regardless of the degree or even presence of formal religion, by being the best person he or she can be.
If your goal is to be a happier person, I invite you to join me on this exploration of the spiritual path to happiness. I do not offer instant answers or the solutions to all your problems. Instead, I will help you look at what gives you identity as a human being and how you can exercise your human qualities to the fullest to achieve happiness as a result of living as a spiritual being. That is the path to true contentment, to a successful pursuit of happiness.
Part 1
LIFE, LIBERTY, and the PURSUIT of HAPPINESS

The Pursuit of Happiness
S ince time immemorial, we humans have been engaged in the pursuit of happiness. The authors of the Declaration of Independence even declared happiness to be one of our unalienable rights. The actual achievement of happiness, however, has always been elusive. Many of us settle for freedom from discontent.
I once noticed the logo on a can of evaporated milk claiming it was milk from contented cows. Why should we care whether the cows are content or not? Obviously, the manufacturer wants to convince us that the finest quality milk comes from the best cows, and that the best cows are contented cows. In other words, that the degree of contentment is the measurement of cow excellence.
As desirable as contentment might be, however, it does not constitute happiness. Absence of a negative feeling does not constitute a positive feeling. Contentment is not the same as happiness, at least not human happiness. While being free of discontent may be fine for a cow, it does not suffice for a human being. The pursuit of happiness for us is more than that.
Where s the Happiness?
I was once invited to give a talk on Can There Be Happiness in the Twenty-First Century? It occurred to me that perhaps, one hundred years ago, there might have been a lecture titled, Wi
