Description

Don't let fear rule your life. Throughout time, we have sought peace and safety by trying to out-guess the unknown. We have tried to prepare for the unexpected and the apparitions of our minds. In an age of 24-hour cable news, when we can stay glued to the latest terrorist attack or natural disaster, the next epidemic, and what the pundits tell us we should be afraid of, our efforts to control the unknown and keep ourselves safe have led to a collective as well as a personal sensation of fear. We have become addicted to fear. But we don't need to be adrenaline junkies. Fearproof Your Life guides us through a process of how discovering who we truly are immunizes us from our own fears, as well as those of others. Bailey takes us through a process of knowing, listening to, and honoring our own unique True Self, of being willing to listen to our truth and act from it, without seeking approval, of being willing to forgive ourselves and others and take responsibility for what we create.

Self Help/Recovery
“In the absence of fear , your life will never be the same.” —from the Foreword by Richard Carlson
Fearproof Your Lifeis a book for our times. In language that is simple and accessible, Joseph Bailey guides us to find the root source of our fear—within ourselves—and then to over come that fear, and overcome al l addiction, through self-transformation.” —Henry Emmons,M.D., author ofThe Chemistry of Joy
“In many ways,Fearproof Your Lifeis a complete spiritual path.” —Hugh Prather, author ofStanding on My Head
“Fear locks us in an illusionar y sand castle of protection with a false sense of security from demons, dangers, and all that we dread. Each day the tide of truth sweeps in and destroys our tentative hold on security . No matter how often the castle of illusor y control is destroyed, the ego rebuilds it with fearful, vigilant thoughts. This cycle has all the trappings and symptoms of addiction: denial, rationalization, pr ojection, increased tolerance to the substance (in this case fear), imbalance that seems nor -mal, and increased harmful and fatal consequences that we minimize and blame on others.”—from the Introduction

Praise for Joseph Bailey andFearproof Your Life
“I like this book because it provides me with physical as well as men-tal tools for releasing fear . It also contains fascinating methods for measuring progress. Most importantly, by guiding me in how to access my deeper Self, it ushers me into the Place where I am already free of fear. In many ways,Fearproof Your Lifeis a complete spiritual path.” —Hugh Prather, author ofStanding On My Head
Fearproof Your Lifeis a book for our times. Fear itself is an epidemic in our culture, and the actions that flow from fear cause much of the suffering that cur rently permeates our world. Joe Bailey , a powerful teacher and gifted psychotherapist, gives wise counsel on how to respond to this pervasive fear. In language that is simple and accessi-ble, Joe guides us to find the r oot sour ce of our fear—within our -selves—and then to overcome that fear, and overcome all addiction, through self-transformation. This is not an easy self-help book. It is really a book about awakening, finding freedom from fear and other attachments of the ego, and using that freedom to respond to the deep needs that we see ever ywhere in today’s world. Inner stillness, clarity of mind, a compassionate heart, courageous action—are these not what we long for? These are the traits that Joe Bailey embodies in his own life, and shar es with us all in the pages of this book. May it bring you, and this beautiful world we shar e, a gr eater sense of peace.” —Henry Emmons, MD, author ofThe Chemistry of Joy: A Three-Step Program for Overcoming Depression Through Western Science and Eastern Wisdom
Fearproofis a must read for anyone who is just plain tir ed of living from pain, scarcity, and having a constant dull feeling. Joe knows about living from love and joy because he is joy and love! Read it and be in love!” —Craig & Patricia Neal, Heartland, Inc.

This book was inspired by the events surrounding September 11, 2001.AsIwitnessedpeoplesresponsestotheterroristattacks,the media’s coverage, and the subsequent military and political r e-sponses, I saw the emergence of an epidemic of fear . I later real-ized that this obsession with fear has always been with us, but these events heightened my awar eness of a world pr eoccupied with fear. This awareness motivated me to write a book to help in the healing of the cause of all fear—the separation fr om our true nature—our spiritual Self. Since then, I have encountered many people’ s courageous, calming, and wise responses tothis epidemic of fear. Many strang-ers have inspired me, whether facing a terminal illness, experienc-ing a catastrophe on the level of Katrina, or simply dealing w ith daily life in the hectic twenty-first century . I wrote this book to help me and all of us to deal with a world in the pr ocess of an enormous transformation. I want to thank all those who, simply by being themselves, have inspired me to live a fearless life. I especially want to thank my dear friend Richar d Carlson, who died shortly after writing the foreword to this book. Richard was my coauthor ofSlowing Down to the Speed of Life.He and I were best friends and colleagues. Over the years he has encouraged all my writings but especially this book, as he saw the desire of hu-manity to live a fearless life. I will miss his friendship and encour-agement, but I will always feel his love and influence on me as a person and as a writer.
10
I also want to thank my greatest supporter , teacher , and truth editor—my wife Michael. She has been my partner in the pursuit of spiritual understanding for over twenty-six years and is a constant source of joy and love. As for my friends who inspire and teach me by the lives they live, I want to thank my physical trainer, Ron Morris who has guided me to be my tr ue Self on a physical level; my friend Karen Clark for her courageous story of cancer; my sister Ginny for her love and support and her cheerleading over the years; and to all my friends who make life worthwhile and a joy. Professionally, I want to thank my agent, Mark Chimsky for helping me find my new publisher, Conari Press, and for always being there to encourage, challenge, and support my writing career. He is more than an agent; he is a good friend. For edito-rial guidance I want to thank Laurie V iera who began to polish my book at an early stage in its development. I also want to thank Caroline Pincus and her team of editors from Conari Press who took the manuscript to a new level of clarity and readability . I want to thank my publisher at Conari Press, Jan Johnson, who believed in this book from the beginning and guided in its evo-lution to its pr esent form.
FEARPROOF YOUR LIFE
Foreword 5
Writing a quality book on the addiction to fear is no small undertaking. For a book on this subject to be truly useful to its readers, its author must embody the material and not be fright-ened himself. That, of course, eliminates around 99.99 percent of all authors! I was honored to be asked to write this forewor d because I have had the privilege of knowing Joseph Bailey, both personally and pr ofessionally, for many, many years, and I can honestly say that he is more “at ease” with his life and less fright-ened than anyone I’ve ever known. Being around Joe Bailey is a very comforting experience. I’ve personally witnessed him calm down clients, total strangers, at-tendees at his seminars, friends, family , and even children. It is said that everyone is at least a little frightened, but I’ve yet to see that with Joseph. I find that when I’m with him, my own fears begin to disappear. His message is power ful and contagious. It’s also extremely easy to understand. No psychobabble here. Just excellent, heartfelt information that really solves the pr oblem. After reading this book, my sense is that you, too, will feel his comfort. By the way, if you ever have a chance to see Joseph speak at a seminar or book signing, I encourage you to make the effort. It could change your life. Joseph is a fearless speaker , and in my opinion one of the best and most profound speakers in the world. Fear has become rampant in our own cultur e. It dominates our minds as well as our media. Fear is responsible for all hatred,
12
wars, greed, and other subhuman qualities. It is also used as a tool of manipulation by those wishing to keep us frightened as a means of staying in power . We have no shortage of reasons to eliminate fear in our world. Fearproof Your Lifeis a book on how to have a permanent change of heart regarding fear. You will learn so much about fear in this book—where it originates (not where you might imag-ine), what keeps it going, and, most important, how to let it go. I encourage you to pay particular attention to two things: where fear comes from—no exceptions—and how to eliminate it from your life forever. In the absence of fear, your life will never be the same. You’ll be more confident, of course, but you’ll also be free to experi -ence tremendous intimacy with others and take appropriate risks, all without fear . Life with less fear is not only mor e rewarding and nourishing, but it’s a lot more fun too! In this book, you’ll lear n the invaluable tool of reflection, and how reflection can add depth and security to your life. Since fear is such an overwhelming problem in our culture, there could not be a more important book in my eyes. I believe this b ook should be r equired reading in schools. If it wer e, we’d live in a much less frightened world. I’ll be giving this book to almost everyone I know! I read this book in just two delicious sittings, meaning I could not put it down. Having been someone who has been frightened on many occasions, I feel very grateful that Joseph Bailey has written this book. I’m cer tain that my fear will never dominate my life again, and I’m confident that you will join me after enjoying this tremendous book, which I highly and enthusiasti-cally recommend.
