INTRODUCTION
How to Become an MI5 Intelligence Officer
When most people think of MI5, the first thing that comes to mind is ‘spying’. Spy culture is everywhere; on film screens, TV series and in books. We associate MI5 with sharply dressed, enigmatic individuals, working discreetly to protect the country. Never seen, and never heard, these individuals are a mystery to the general public. They could be anywhere, or anyone. The question is, how far is our view of MI5 intelligence shaped by what we see in the media? What is the reality of MI5 intelligence work, and how does one apply to work within the organisation?
In this book, we’ll answer all of your questions. With the help of our detailed pre selection test guides, we will show you how to apply for MI5, and how to succeed within the role. Using our guide, you can unravel the mysteries behind MI5 intelligence work, and secure your own position as an Intelligence Officer.
Every day, our lives and the lives of those around us are under threat. Terrorism and other serious crimes pose a real danger to the general public. If left unchecked, the perpetrators of these crimes could impose serious damage on our society. The 21st century has already seen several major acts of terrorism. The global response to these acts has been to increase focus on intelligence services, which can prevent further disasters from happening. In the current global climate, there are more intelligence positions available than ever before. This means that with the right amount of work and preparation, YOU can achieve your dream job with MI5. However, it also means that you will face serious competition. There are others who are just as hungry for the chance as you, who will fight tooth and nail to prove that they are the best candidate for the job. The difference, however, is that you have purchased this guide.
This guide will provide you with in-depth, highly quality information in regards to the MI5 selection tests. You will need to pass all of these tests, in order to secure a job as an Intelligence Officer.
When applying to be an MI5 Intelligence Officer, there are several stages that you will have to go through. Listed in order, the stages are as follows:
•   Online Pre Screening Tests;
•   MI5 Competency Questionnaire and MI5 Verbal Reasoning Test;
•   Assessment Centre: Written Exercise;
•   Telephone Interview;
•   Assessment Centre: Written Exercise, Role Play, Group Exercise;
•   Initial Interview;
•   Final Interview.
In this book, we will cover every single one of these stages, along with the core competencies and behaviours that you will need to demonstrate in order to successfully pass each stage of the selection process.
In the next chapter, we’ll explain exactly what the ‘core competencies’ are, how they apply to an MI5 Intelligence Officer and how you can use these competencies to secure your dream job.
CHAPTER 1
Am I Right For The Role?
Before applying to any job, it’s really important that you consider your personality against the requirements of the role. This is especially important for an MI5 Intelligence Officer, which requires very particular character traits and skills. These traits and skills are also known as ‘core competencies’. Core competencies are essentially a list of behaviours and attributes that potential candidates need to be able to demonstrate in order to succeed. The better you can prove that you are in possession of the core competencies, the better chance you will have of getting the job.
Throughout the selection process, you should use these core competencies as the basis for every single one of your responses. You need to demonstrate in every response that you meet the standards and behaviours of the organisation, and that you are aware of why these standards are important.

Tailor every single one of your answers so that it meets at least one of the core competencies. This will improve your chances of being successful!
You’ll be directly tested on your knowledge of these competencies, along with your understanding of how to apply them at various stages in the process, particularly during the online competency test and the competency based interview.
In this chapter, we will take a detailed look at the role of an Intelligence Officer, the entry requirements for the job, and the core competencies that you will need to know if you wish to improve your chances.
THE ROLE
Intelligence Officers play an essential role in MI5 investigations. Their job is to keep the country safe against threats to national security, such as: terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, and espionage. They do this by taking part in investigations, assessing threat levels and analysing digital intelligence and data.
Here are just some of the common activities that MI5 Intelligence Officers engage in on a day-to-day basis:
•   Communicating with translators/audio analysts;
•   Investigating new leads;
•   Analysing and checking data;
•   Initiating surveillance coverage;
•   Communicating with agents out in the field.
REQUIREMENTS:
The basic, fundamental entry requirements for an employee of MI5, are as follows:
•   You must be 18 years old or over;
•   You must be a born or naturalised British citizen, who has been a resident in the UK for 9 out of the last 10 years;
•   You must not discuss the details of your application form, or any future career, with anyone outside of your close family.
While there are no other ‘official’ requirements, in order to work as an MI5 Intelligence Officer and pass the various application stages, you will need to be proficient in English and Maths. You’ll also need good computer skills. The majority of people who apply for MI5 are in possession of a 2:1 degree or higher. In order to compete with these people, you will need to (at the very least) match their qualifications. Remember that you will not be able to ‘blag’ any of the stages. The MI5 selection process is a deliberately rigorous and challenging series of exercises, designed to separate truly capable candidates from those who aren’t suitable for the job. The key, as with any job application, is in the preparation stages. The better you prepare yourself prior to the selection process, the more chance you have of being successful.
Now, let’s look at the core competencies required from an MI5 Intelligence Officer, and determine what exactly these core competencies mean. During the application process, it is absolutely vital that you can demonstrate that you are in possession of these core competencies and have used them in the past.

The core competencies are a way for you to match the essential criteria with previous experience.
With this in mind, at the end of every competency we have provided you with a textbox, which you should fill in with an example of how you have used this competency in the past. This will be fantastic practice for the application forms and interview. The more competencies you can demonstrate in one answer, the better your response will be.
At this point, don’t worry about being too detailed, just think of an example of when you have used the competency that is being described. Whilst you progress through this book, you will be able to go back and use/further these examples in your application and assessment responses.
MI5 INTELLIGENCE OFFICER - CORE COMPETENCIES
Teamwork:
The first core competency required by an MI5 Intelligence Officer is having the ability to work as part of a team .
