L ife is the most valuable asset. I am forever indebted to God for giving me health and wisdom to start and complete this book.
Behind every success, there is a team. My beloved husband, Pastor Harrison Mburani, has been my great support from the start to completing this project. Thank you, Honey, for being part of this project and supporting me in all ways.
I am very grateful to The Conrad Press for publishing this book. I am specifically indebted to Mr James Essinger for overseeing the editing, typesetting, designing and publishing process. Thank you, James, for seeing the value in this book. You are a pleasant person to work with; you make publishing a book an enjoyable adventure. I liked your excellent communication and support at every stage.
I am greatly indebted to Miss Karla Jane Harris for her technical and experienced skills in editing the manuscript. Thank you, Karla, for the invaluable support I received from you and the value you added to this book. It was pleasant to work with you on this project.
When I submitted my manuscript to Bloomsbury Publishing, they could not take it because they already had a closely similar book in progress. However, the feedback I received from Mr Matt James was invaluable. This is part of what he wrote, ‘Many thanks for sending over this proposal. From what I’ve read, it’s very interesting and well-written.’ Thank you Matt, for being a person who goes the extra mile to see potential and encourage it to blossom.
I am deeply indebted to my former employer for allowing me the opportunity to lead the programs department and holding the human resources office. Being the head of programs and HR enabled me to observe the relationships between employees’ character and their levels of success. This knowledge has been valuable in the process of writing this book.
My appreciation also goes to Mrs Doris Jorgensen, my former boss and mentor. The day I started working with Doris, I learnt that my success or failure depended entirely on me. She exposed me and other staff members to a work environment that made it possible for any one of us to make it to the top. According to Mrs Jorgensen, it was not where you started from that mattered, but where you could reach that was important. Her leadership style gave everyone enough growth room. However, one aspect determined those that grew and those that remained stunted or even withered. One’s character determined how far one would succeed. Thank you, Doris; I am ever grateful that I met you.
As you read along, you will see that this book presents a rainbow of experiences. Illustrations are drawn from men and women from all walks of life, from professionals to common men and women you find on the streets, shops, and buses. To all of you whose experiences contributed to the information in this book, I say a big thank you.
Last but not least, thanks to you for purchasing a copy or reading this book. Just one caution, this book does not work like magic. To gain from it, you should consistently practice and implement what it offers.

To our dear children, Jabin, Ariella, Netanella and Miracle.
No level of success will be out of reach if you engage the right character and follow the principles in this book.

Chapter one
Becoming
S uccess is about becoming and not amassing. The irony about the contemporary way of measuring success is that assessment is based on wealth, achievements, influence, power, status, education, and fame. Although these aspects are essential ingredients of success, they are not adequate to impute success on an individual. Real success goes beyond the tangibles and measurables of life.
Fulfilling and lasting success has more to do with the individual’s inner aspect than the external displays. It would be limiting to measure real success by one’s bank statement, net worth, investments, or fame. Many excel in these aspects yet live and die as failures.
Success is a product of character. Character is not born, and neither is it inherited; it is made from choice and consistency. Character is like a water tap. Depending on the direction you turn it, it can give you steaming water or ice-cold water. Conditional to the course you turn your character, it can deliver for you success or failure. Therefore, anyone can be successful contingent on the character they assign themselves. Every individual is daily presented with opportunities to make decisions that will culminate either into success or failure. Thus, to succeed is a step by step choice, and likewise, it is to fail.
By developing the right character, people like Harold Hamm, Madam CJ Walker, Oprah Gail Winfrey and Dr Benjamin Solomon Carson Sr, all born on the ‘wrong side of life’, overcame the numerous hurdles in their way to success.
Harold Hamm was born into poverty. The family needed every hand to help in making ends meet. This meant that young Harold had to participate in family labour. He helped pick cotton barefooted because his family could not afford something as basic as shoes. Though born in abject poverty, he through diligent work curved his way to success and established an oil empire; Continental Resources from nothing but his sweat and labour. The youth whose first job was at a gas station worked his way to becoming a billionaire.
Madam CJ Walker, born to slave parents, fought her way to success. She refused to be content with moderate success. She drove herself into building a successful business that turned her into America’s first self-made female millionaire.
Dr Benjamin Carson Sr did not have a promising start in life. In fact, at some point, everything seemed to be going wrong. He was raised in a broken family, had the lowest grades in his class and was on the verge of becoming a knife crime perpetrator. The natural prediction for such a child would have been that he spends his adult life in the ghetto or prison. However, Dr Carson changed his destiny by dropping the loser’s habits and adopted the achiever’s attitude. With that, he was not only able to overhaul his character but also changed his destiny. He became a world-renowned Neurosurgeon who performed many unprecedented successful Neurosurgeries and developed new ways of treating brain stem tumours. His contribution and inspiration in the medical world remain outstanding. As a result, he received sixty honorary doctorate degrees and was selected by the Library of Congress as one of its living legends. It is unbelievable that a boy who had the lowest grades in class was also housing super brains. It is inconceivable that a boy who was once a member of the gang could achieve that much. Dr Benjamin Carson’s life proves that the right character transformed what many would have considered a ‘human write-off’ into an invaluable asset. His life demonstrates that there is no irredeemable case if the right character is applied as a remedy to attaining success.
Born in poverty and subjected to a hard and abusive childhood did not deter Oprah Winfrey from achieving. Her diligent character has enabled her to move from being an ordinary woman to becoming one of the most famous, wealthy, influential, and successful women of the 21 st Century.
None of the above-cited cases had an inheritance or a position of advantage to hinge on their success. They built their success on what was inside them, their character. Success is rooted in the inner values that one lives for and pass on to the next generation.
Supreme success is not the ability to get it right the first time, but the stamina not to give up till you get it right. This is the reason why names like Martin Luther King Jr. continue to echo through generations. It is the inner values that Nelson Mandela stood for that set him apart. His character and the legacy that he left behind made him one of the heroes that history will continue to hold in its pages.
While many people will cite injustice, inequality, lack of resources and opportunities as reasons for their failures, these can be challenged. Available evidence proves that with the right character, no hurdle cannot be surmounted. The biggest obstacle in your path to success is your desire to pursue success on a pre-navigated road. However, at times the road to success will have turns and twists that take you through the jungle of hardships and unfavourable situations. Even then, it is upon you to forge your way out if you do not want to remain stuck in mediocrity.
It is your ability to find the way out of your situation that will make you stand out. Clara B. Williams could not be allowed in the classroom by most of her professors because of her black skin colour. That did not stand in her way to achieving. Instead of quitting, she stood in the hallway and took notes. She eventually graduated and later was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree, had a street named after her, and a day issued in her honour and recognition.
While character plays a vital role in determining an individual’s success and destiny, many people seem not to realize its importance. However, when you learn that your character brands you, you will start to mind the type of brand you want to become.
